We had a problem since a group had to stay another night and they didn't have room for us so they sent us to the Helmsly on Central Park west which was a headache, but they tried very hard to make it all ok. THey gave us cab fare for both rides, sent us wine, and both rooms were very nice. All in all except for the hassle, they were great

Our rooms were uncomfortably warm in April even with the heat off and our window open. The staff told us it was because heat rises and offered us a room on a lower floor where there was no Internet service. We needed Internet and, so, endured oppressive heat even though was in the 30s outside. It took almost 24 hours for them to get the TVs in our two rooms to work. The morning tea/coffee service that was supposed to shut down at 10 was taken away at 8. The staff was unfriendly, responding to inquiries by saying "it's broken" as if that is an acceptable state of affairs.

We were happy with the hotel but on the morning after the first night we were nearly suffocated by smoke from cigarettes. It was a non-smoking floor so we think it was the folks next door. Management moved us into another room which was much better, however if you are expecting coffee or tea making facilities you will be sorely mistaken.

I have been to the Helmsley before and have always been satisfied with the rooms and service. I stayed in a new wing with all new carpeting and the rooms were all redone. Very nice and very clean. I would reccommend this hotel to anyone wanting to visit NYC. Close to Grand Central Station. Good location.

We were surprisingly impressed with our stay! We got a very good rate on a special with Expedia. The hotel is a little off the beaten path - it is closest to Grand Central Station where we caught the subway to most of our stops - it is walking distance if you are brave and only a five minute cab ride to most of the attractions - worth in for the money we saved! The hotel is a bit older, but well maintained.

This is an extremely convenient, comfortable hotel in a great location where you can easily walk to lots of Midtown`s attractions i.e 5th Ave, Times Square etc. It`s nice but not overly flashy, and seems to be more of a business hotel. We saw lots of pilots, and airline staff staying there. Service is very good, and friendly. Next time I go to Manhattan I will still stay there again.

Stayed for 3 nights in December. The room was very spacious and clean. We had a corner room with big windows and a great view of the empire state building. It certainly wasn't the most modern of hotels, it could use some remodeling but as long as the room is clean, I'm happy. It is in a very nice location. You can walk to many places easily (Times Square, Rockefeller Plaza, Empire State Building and shopping on 5th Ave) and the subway is right next door. It was very quiet at night although the beds are a bit lumpy (no heavenly beds here). In any other city, I would have been angry about the price but in NYC I geuss most of the rooms are very expensive. Overall, it was a good experience. If you want a clean, quiet hotel with nice size rooms in a good location, this is a good one

The window treatments wouldn't roll up, making it impossible to enjoy the view of the city No internet access in the room No bathrobes New York Times arrived only 2 of 4 mornings No in-room pay-per-view movies Their express check out option involves viewing your bill on the TV, but requires calling down to the desk to confirm it's okay, then dropping your key-card(s) off at the desk. I enjoyed a lot my stay at the New York Helmsley. The location is great, I could walk to most of my business appointments and to restaurants. The room is very comfortable, and for the price I got through Expedia, I think it is a very good deal. However, I wish your receptionist was more accomodating to an earlier check in, she insisted on the 4:00 PM which was rather inconvenient.

This hotel is excellently located 3 blocks from Grand Central Station. The rooms are comfortable and the amenities good. The have a great bar which serves complimentary appetizers 5pm to 7pm Monday through Friday. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We stayed here right before Thanksgiving and it is my understanding that the hotel rates in Manhattan go up during that time of the year due to Europeans coming in to do their Christmas shopping. I found the rates to be extremely good for this type of hotel. I will definitely stay here again.

I liked this hotel better than I thought I would. The service was polite and prompt, the restaurant was good, and the amenities were fine. The only problem I had was that the ventilation system (likely true for many older hotels) did not do a good job of filtering out cigarette smoke from other parts of the hotel. Additionally, despite being in a non-smoking room, this room clearly had been a smoking room at one time, was not completely cleaned of smoke residue, and my clothes smelled of smoke by the time I left.

We stayed at the NY Hemlsley for 6 nights and found it to be a really good hotel and excellent value. The only drawback is that the lifts were a little old. Staff were very helpful and not just in it for the gratuities. Size of the rooms was particularly impressive - really spacious by Manhattan standards. The location is very good with the Theatres being only a 20 minute walk and Grand Central being less than 5 minutes.

I have to say that overall this hotel was really not that bad ... but for the money; I would expect a bit more. For starters this hotel seems to be plagued with elevator problems. Immediatly after checking in, my family and I got stuck between floors for about 20 minutes with a very embarrassed bellhop. Had it not been for the fact that he was probably the nicest guy you could ever hope to get stuck with ... this would've been a nightmare. Later that week, 3 of the 6 elevators were out of service. I had to wait about 15 minutes to get an elevator to the lobby from our floor. Later that evening the situation was even worse .. there was a crowd of about 20 people standing around waiting for an elevator to get to their rooms. Another issue was with the room air conditioning system. The weather was pretty warm a night on a few nights and no matter what the room thermostat was set to, the system simply would not cool the room down very much. Most nights we left the windows open a bit. Depite all of this, we managed to have a good time ... but I don't think that we will ever stay here again.

It is really too bad that the hotal is not updated. The wallpaper and furniture (alarm clocks, chairs, bedspreads) look very dated (and dirty) and although I do not blame housekeeping (there are only so many times that you can get spots out!!!) Managment needs to replace and update items much more regularly. Staying there made me feel "cheated" becuase they charge top dollar, yet seem to skip (at patrons expense) to increase profits.
