After all the good reviews I was very disappointed to find my room in such poor condition. The hotel itself is okay, i.e. the lobby area and restaurant, and the location is great, but to say my room was shabby is being generous. The carpet was soiled looking, paint was peeling, parts were missing from bathroom fixtures and the king size mattress hung over the box springs so the bottom sheets could not be tucked in which made for an uncomfortable night.

From the outside building looks old and scary..but once you enter, it is VERY nice. The lobby, sitting, dining area, and meeting rooms decor are French and rich looking. 5 star quality The service was excellent and the staff was very friendly. They gave excellent directions and were very helpful. I give service and staff 5 stars. The Good of the rooms: Nice and clean: The bedding was great,if you like very soft beds with feather pillows and down comforters. The decor was homey and had the rich French look to it. The bathroom was nice and clean. 31/2 stars. Needs Improvement: Room was small. Lighting is dim.If you notice details, carpet has stains, the comforter had a few snags, water stains near the ceiling AC vent, little paint peels in bath ceiling, few tears and light brown stains in wall paper from previous wall paper. Although it is an old historic hotel, it is in good condition and I didn't feel icky. I was impressed overall. If not for the need improvement areas in the guest room, I would give 41/2 to 5 stars.

This hotel has a great lobby, lovely looking restaurant and lounge, but the rooms (and bathrooms) didn't quite meet the same standards. However, the bed was the most comfortable I've ever slept in!!! And the location is fantastic.

The rooms were very open and beautifully decorated. However, the front desk service was not very friendly or accomadating. Nevertheless, I would stay there again because of the great location.

Nice place to stay downtown, but it was not what I needed, as the parking was valet only, no swimming pool in the hotel proper, and the room service and cafe was kinda expensive.

Because the Expedia price on a standard room was so reasonable, I expected a "standard" room, not a mini-suite--but a mini-suite is exactly what we got. The room was nicely chilled when we arrived, which was great for me but not so great for my wife. There was a sitting room and a separate bedroom; each room had a TV and a phone, plus high-speed Internet access. Heavy drapes blocked out the sun completely, allowing us to sleep late, and being on the fifth floor ensured that we weren't bothered by traffic noise (as the hotel is downtown, weekend traffic is very light anyway). Staff was very friendly and helpful, and prices were very reasonable (our "incidentals" for a 3-night stay, including two orders from room service and drinks in the bar, came to less than $100). All in all, a wonderful hotel experience--and frankly, the best hotel stay we've had in the United States. The only downside is that there's not much to do in downtown Birmingham on the weekend, so rent a car or be prepared to pay for a taxi (a ride to The Summit for dinner and a movie cost about $65 round trip).

My husband and I love this hotel! My parents stay here every time they are in Birmingham as well. The service is incredible--the front desk staff always remember us and make us feel extremely special. I lived in Birmingham for 9 years before moving to New York...in my opinion, this is the ONLY place to stay when visiting Birmingham.

The Tutwiler is like grandma's house- it was once really grand, but it is now worn a bit. It needs to be redone. The service is good and they really mean well. It is all just a bit shabby. It is still the only place to stay in Birmingham that has any character.

A little outdated. Bed not fantastic. Pillows not good. Bathtub was not in like new condition. Service was ordinary, run of the mill, adequate, fair, acceptable. Too far from dining options. Hotel staff did not provide clear directions to dining options.
