The hotel was great. The drive to the hotel was impressive. The staff was great and informative. The rooms are awesome. Ceiling are really high at least 15-20 ft. Everything is modern from the plasma TV to the ceiling fan operated by wall mounted control switch. When you leave your room you can picture the nuns of the day walking around doing their daily tasks. While we were there, there was a wedding. With the church across street, you could also imagine the sisters going to mass. The hotel is great. It is in a great location to shops, restaurants, and historical sights.

El Convento is a beautiful hotel. We had a wonderful time and intend on visting again. The food was amazing in the tapas bar and our room was totally gorgeous. It had huge tall ceilings, great furniture, and the most comfy bed of all time. Seriously, I love this place. The staff were so nice. Don't forget to check out the view of old San Juan from the roof at night.

This hotel is a beautiful renovation of a convent, with antique furnishing and art work in the public places. The rooms are lovely, with wood-coffered ceilings, comfortable furniture, nice seating areas, and beautiful garden views. The location is superb, on a main street of Old San Juan with a good selection of restaurants in and around the hotel, luxury shopping everywhere, and the cathedral and old fortifications surrounding.

A very comfortable place to stay. Old world charm. Very attentive staff. Terrific location. Loved the wine and cheese reception on the Veranda every day. Very relaxing and a great time to meet and chat with other guests. Lounges, terraces and lobby areas are beautiful, clean and well maintained. Maintenance of the hotel seems to be an ongoing priority.

We loved the El Convento. The hotel is in easy walking distance to all of Old San Juan. The local restaurants are wonderful -- pork sandwiches at the Parrot Club; mallorcas for breakfast at La Bombanero; tapas at the hotel's own El Picoteo. And there is Agua Viva, Dragonfly, Sophia's...the list goes on and on. And all a five minute walk from the hotel! Shopping is terrific, whether you are looking for local art -- paintings, santos figures, colorful masks -- or if you need a new hand bag from Coach or other outlet. There are museums and/or galleries every few blocks and lots of historical places to visit -- El Morro, San Juan Cathedral, La Fortaleza. It would be a pity to go to Puerto Rico and miss the best part -- Old San Juan. Likewise, it would be a pity and go and miss El Convento. The courtyard is lovely, the rooms are filled with Spanish antiques, and the service is impeccable. You get a real taste of the true Puerto Rico when you visit OSJ and the EL Convento.

This beautiful old building with galleries and courtyards is full of old world charm and understated elegance. Every staff member is hospitable and gracious. It has the feeling of some European hotels or New Orleans. It's centrally located for exploring art galleries, looking at architecture, fine dining, walking the old town. If you like the uniformity and familiarity of a chain hotel or white glove cleanliness this is probably not the place for you. It's unique and old world.

The hotel is located in the most picturesque section of Old San Juan, with an excellent view of San Juan harbor. Very beautiful interior courtyard. Monuments and shops within walking distance. Driving to the hotel is a problem, as traffic is extremely heavy in the area. Excellent valet parking at the hotel is a big plus.

This is a first class hotel with beautiful public areas and very nice rooms. The more expensive rooms are on higher floors with better views. I stayed in a deluxe room and could see the cruise ships pulling into the bay, but even the lower floors have views of the streets and surrounding buildings of gorgeous Old San Juan. The pool is miniscule and the room and queen bed are a little small, but I was alone for my two night stay so I didn't mind. I had free high speed internet (wired), a plus. If you like small luxurious hotels, this is a must.

The hotel should not be rated a 4-star. The rooms are small, the bathrooms are very small. The cleaniness of the room was far from expected -- floors went unswept, tub went uncleaned for days, towel scarcity. The service was slow to respond to requests for items that did not operate. The hotel is located in the heart of old San Juan. The rooftop swimming pool is not much larger than the bathtub. The marble baths were tight and often uncomfortable.

My husband and I splurged and stayed here for 2 nights on our honeymoon. It's a fantastic hotel with a stunning courtyard with a 300 year old tree. Room was large, view over the city, a beautiful iron wrought bed, TV w/VCR, stereo system, mini-fridge. Staff were very helpful, esp in recommending restaurants(they have all the menus in a binder). The location is right in the heart of old san juan near El Morro and Calle de San Francisco. Lots of nice touches, like having 2 complimentary bottles of water in the frig daily; twice a day housekeeping with turn-down service; complimentary continental breakfast made fancy by having a piano player in the courtyard. Breakfast is very nice; baskets of toast & pastries and plates of fruit served to your table. Free wine & cheese hour daily from 6-8pm, the best time to sit overlooking the courtyard. Pool is tiny, but terrace overlooks the city and the jacuzzi is nice. Only negative was our room (501) was next to where they host all their weddings (most weekends there are weddings both nights) it was noisy. Pool is outside of 4th floor, so if you are on that side, you'll find people in the pool staring into your room. Next time, we'll ask for a room on the 5th floor, on the opposite end from the pool/chapel. Overall, gorgeous building, ideal location, we'd definitely go back!

I felt so pampered and catered to during my stay. I almost booked with another "chain" hotel, but I am so pleased that I chose to stay @ El Convento. It was both charming and luxurious. I wanted to feel like I was in Puerto Rico and that is exactly what it felt like. The decor and atmosphere were a great reflection of the country ( on the upscale side!). I will definately return and send anyone to this sweet place!

After spending 5 nights at a very low-budget beach motel, we treated ourselves to a rather lavish final night in Old San Juan at El Convento...it was worth every penny. While the rooms are small-ish, they lack nothing. The thing we appreciated most was the free bottled water in the fridge, which was refreshed in the evening when housekeeping came to do turndown service. The hotel had so much charm and the staff was helpful and lovely.

We only stayed for two nights (we were wrapping up our Puerto Rico trip in Old San Juan after exploring other parts of the island), but it was quite a way to end the vacation. Fantastic location, great service, and a number of fine restaurants/bars right in the hotel. The free wine & cheese each evening over-looking the city from the 3rd floor balcony was the clincher...I would definitely go back!

This hotel was in the middle of everything. We never needed a car to get to the things we wanted to do in Old San Juan. Our stay at this hotel was excellent, and the employees there were really nice. We especially liked the courtyard, the way the rooms opened up to the outside was so cool. Especially when it rained, truly beautiful. We got a room that had it's own patio, these rooms have really high ceilings, and the patio was an awesome suggestion by the staff. They will book tours for you, and they even reheated some of my leftovers and offered to serve them for me out on their patio near the library. The only thing I'd say is that it is a bit pricey but if that's what it costs to keep them so nice then hey price worth paying. This is the place to stay when you want to wander around old San Juan, looking at all the shops, experiencing the narrow streets, busy bars, bistling town etc. Not really the place to be if you're looking to be at the beach all day, or anything like that.

Nov 21,2004.Spent one night at this most remarkable small luxury hotel...an experience we won't forget and hope to repeat. Came off of a cruise early in the morning but some delightful young lady allowed us to check in early and gave us a suite. Yes the hotel is old but that is most of it's ambience....truly a wonderful place that I would higly recommend. The view from the upper level is great..the pool and hot tub are fair BUT the rest makes up for it. You are really treated royally and the location is great.
