Cheap and no frills, but at least it was clean.

A budget hotel to its core, at least Uncle Billy's was clean, and the staff was smiling. The downtown location absolutely cannot be beat. The building itself and the in-room fixtures are decades old. In our particular unit, the bathroom light only turned on about 1/7 flips. The mattress was old and sagging in the middle. Standing in the shower was like standing under a dribbling faucet. The carpet, doors, walls all showed their age and were in desperate need of replacement. But you don't come to Kona to sit in your room, right? If you're looking for something cheap but clean, Uncle Billy's is the place for you. Their morning breakfast buffet was also tasty and affordable. Just keep in mind that this facility is as no-frills as they come. But if all you need is a clean room with a lock on the door, you'll be perfectly happy with Uncle Billy's.

Uncle Billy's was just what I wanted--a cheap, clean room for my first night in Hawaii before hitting the road for volcano. Wouldn't stay longer unless you enjoy the teen/tee shirt shop/boom box scene.

If you are looking for a place to sleep and shower, this is it. Nothing more. The accomidations were VERY campy. The beds were suitable, and the shower worked fine. This is what we used the room for. Had it been a little updated, we may have hung about the room and grounds more. The swimming pool was yuck. My kids would not even consider it getting in it. We were there for 8 days, it was NEVER clean. Bottom line? If you are NOT planning on anything fancy, this place is fine. If you want something even remotely fancy, look elsewhere.

The location is good: there are many restaurants and shops around, close to the ocean, though no nice beach in a close proximity. Room was big, pretty clean, but had an odour and touch of an old building.

The workers there are very honest. Had left a wallet in room by mistake but the maid had found it and put it on the table and not a penny was taken. This was very comforting to know. The resturant next to it was very good.

While we were very satisfied with the hotel, one incident stands out as exemplary service. On the day of our departure, we accidentally locked the only set of keys inside our rental car just before checkout time. At checkout time I visited Kenoe at the front desk to explain our situation. In true aloha fashion Kenoe made it clear it was no problem and my concerns instantly became a non-issue. Our hats are off to Uncle Billy's.

An inexpensive hotel in the heart of Kailua Kona, very convenient with a pretty ocean view. BUT, the check-in staff was NOT friendly or very helpful. They seemed bored and unfriendly. When we had to switch rooms because of a faulty, leaking air conditioner, they just didn't make us feel good about it, like we were putting THEM out for having to switch rooms. But overall the experience was positive because it was a great view, a comfortable bed, and a very good price.

I chose this hotel by price first, and then read these user reviews. I would say it was almost right as many guest made comments. If you are to enjoy the outside activities, not staying long time inside hotel, this hotel is perfect much. Very old building actually, but basically no problem for me.

nothing fancy but quite adequate; front desk staff wasn't terribly helpful or friendly; kids pool too dirty for my daughter to swim in; but can't beat the location or the price; breakfast buffet excellent.

I will never know why hotel/motels keep junk TVs. The one in our room should have been thrown out. They're not that expensive--I don't understand cheapness on TVs and carpeting--just escapes me. The famous line is "you get what you pay for"?!?

This place was relatively cheap and I had read a lot of negative comments online about it. But the place turned out to be much better than anticipated. Location was perfect actually. Good place for students or other people on tight budgets.

Uncle Billy's Kona Bay Hotel was fine. Not wonderful, not awful. It is slightly run down and could use a facelift. The bathtub faucet leaked and we had to get the TV remote fixed and the furnishings were dated. But hey, we were in the ocean every day and didn't get that dirty and we weren't in Kona to watch TV or hang out in the room. The staff was friendly and attentive. If you are looking for a resort-type atmosphere, this isn't it. If you want basic digs with a fridge and clean beds, you'll be happy.
