We stayed at Hanalei Bay for five nights on our honeymoon and weren't super thrilled with it. As 20-somethings, we're not super-picky when it comes to hotel service, but there were a few problems here. The people at the front desk weren't very friendly and we couldn't check into our room until 5 p.m., which was annoying. The room itself was okay, but had a door connecting to the room next to it, and we could pretty much hear every word being said next door, and vice versa. Luckily, the AC was loud enough to drown out the noise. The pool is great, but two of the days there weren't any towels. Even when you did get a towel, it was pretty small and very worn out. The views at the hotel are awesome, truly, and the bar is also really nice, with live music every night. My only complaint there is that last call for drinks is at 9:20 p.m.!! Not much nightlife in Princeville. Overall, many of the people staying at the resort seemed to be people who own condos or timeshares, including lots of families with young kids, and retirees. There were very, very few other couples or honeymooners, so if you're looking for more of a romantic, honeymoon resort, you should look elsewhere. Overall, I thought the service and amenities were lacking, although not outrageously so. The place just needs some solid renovations. And new pool towels.

We had to pay almost twenty a night for a crib which I thought was high. Also no one helped us with our luggage to our room even though it was a ways away from the parking lot and downhill. The biggest problem was the air. Our rooms air conditioner didn't work and we complained the first night and the second and third day. In the afternoon of the third day they came by to tell us it would be fixed the next day, which was the day we were leaving. We were never offered another room. We basically had to listen to a loud fan blowing warm air. The grounds were beautiful though and they had a very nice pool. The beach was not so nice, you had to walk down a steep hill and it was a gravely beach with rocks in the water. There were much nicer beaches down the road. Multiple times the staff would see us carting stuff down to our room as they drove by in their golf carts but we were never offered a ride down. The restaurant had good food but was a little pricey. I think you paid more for the view then anything.

The hotel was nice and quiet except for the the roosters but all the ratings warn you of that. We found the staff quite helpful and friendly. They were more than accomodating and had good recommendations. We got a room with the queen sized bed so we did not have to sleep on the pullout so be aware of that before you book. The grounds were very nice and the pool was beautiful, def different. We did hear the vacation opportunity speech but boyt did we enjoy the $100 dinner they gave us just for listening to it. The concierge staff was very helpful and said hi and actually used our names everytime we passed. Luka was a great help with what to do and where to eat. If you are a golfer, they did have 2 courses right there and Princeville is a quiet place to relax. The beach was only 10 min walk away if you chose to walk but they will also cart you down there. I definately loved it and will be back

I loved the location. If you want a true "Hawaiian" view and aloha; Princeville is the place. I loved our view (mountain) and it is very well kept. But...I hated (hated) that we were sleeping on a pull out bed. Very uncomfortable; but worth the "studio" status and the location. The on-site restaurant and bar were very nice, but a little pricey. But, the bar had great live music and view. We knew it was a "vacation ownership/timeshare" hotel, but there was NO major push and the "Island Orientation" was just that, and a chance to win discounts with no hassles for the "touristy" things to do. Some of that is definitely worth while. It was an hour long presentation with continental breakfast. I do not think of myself as a regular traveler as I live on the North Shore of O'ahu. HUGE fan of Hawaii...so I hope that my words help. In the end...definitely the place to get away from it and change your "l'attitude." Stop and smell the plummaria. Lesley

We really only used this hotel as a place to sleep. There is so much to do in Kauai that we would leave the room around 9 am and not return until 9 pm or later. We didn't actually get in the pool; and didn't even go down to beach access area until our last of 3 days in Kauai. We had a mountain view room and the view was very nice. Warning, if you need internet access, you'll want one of the rooms that is catagorized as a "suite". There was no high speed access from the rooms with just the king-size bed and no kitchen. I had to use the for-fee wireless from the lobby and power outlets were scarce in the lobby. They did have for-fee access to hotel-owned computers in the lobby.

Had the "sofa bed" room which is actually a parlor room with a murphy bed. It was just fine and nice to have the kitchen. The TV, however, is mounted to the murphy bed so there's no watching TV in bed. With the view out the window I can't imagine wanting to watch TV anyway.

After reading some of the reviews (regarding sofa pull-outs, etc.) I was a little hesitant to stay here. Overall, though, we wound up very satisfied with our stay. The room we had, although a bit dated and in need of a couple minor repairs, was very comfortable, (we ended up with a king bed, instead of the sofa bed), had a great view, and we loved the convenience of the small kitchen and washer/dryer. The grounds were very well maintained with a real tropical paradise feeling. The staff, (except for one not so friendly front desk person) was always pleasant and very accommodating. We had dinner one night at the Bali Hai restaurant, and it was a real delight. Great food, friendly staff, true aloha spirit. Given the higher prices at some of the other hotels in the area, we were very pleased with the value we got for our money at the Hanalei Bay Resort. Sure, the room could use a little attention, but with all there is to see and do on Kauai, we spent very little time in our room.

I just came back from wonderful vaction in Kauai. I stayed in Hanalei Bay Resort, in studio 1108. I highly recommend this place-it`s in the great area, rooms are nice (especially the one overlooking mountains) and clean. Big pool (cold, though)and wonderful jacuzzi. Some of the staff really nice and helpfull, some of them not really, but it didn`t matter too much. Kaui is so beautiful itself that you don`t really pay attention to the accomodation.

Beautiful setting - it's hard to complain about anything Kauai ... but I'd try a different hotel next time I visit. Concierge was friendly but seemed to engage more w/ couples & families when they asked about activities (I was traveling single). Princeville has beautiful views of/access to Hanalei Bay, but Hanalei town itself looked more laid-back, quirky, fun. Princeville more geared toward couples/families. Hotel's restaurant served amazing food & the service was outstanding. Hotel room wasn't super-clean, but not bad enough to warrant mentioning to staff.

We enjoyed the resort, despite the wet weather. It was in a beautiful setting, great views, the concierge was very helpful and got us good discounts. The sofa bed was a good trade-off for having a full kitchen. It was fairly soft, but not bad for a sofa bed. ~5 mn walk to the ocean was very scenic, (they would give you a ride down or back if you wanted) and the hotel pool was great. However the jacuzzi was out of order several times. We would definitely return. Rent a car!

The location is very pretty. Great view of the Bay. Nice but not perfect. Everything was comfortable but the rug was slightly stained, the cable was out - and a day later no one had checked on the problem, decorations were broken. Maids showed up at 9:30 AM and were not happy to be asked to wait a bit. On the positive side, the people at the front desk were very nice and helpful and, as I said before, the surroundings were very nice.

Probably the most beautiful resort grounds on the island. The area surrounding the resort is less developed and pretty laid-back, as well as quiet. Majority of shops and night-life are at least 20 minutes away, although there are a few within 5 minutes also. Bring plenty of extra $ because most dining and activities are not cheap.

The setting for the Hanalei Bay Resort can't be beat. It is absolutely beautiful. The rooms however, really need to be updated. The carpet and lampshades were stained and bathroom tile was filthy. Housekeeping service was weak. The service in the lounge was great but food choices overall at the resort are limited to Bai Hai Restaurant or lounge food. The pool was closed during part of our stay which was disappointing but the beach below is gorgeous. We might stay at the resort again if the price was right and we rented a room with a kitchenette so meals would be a little easier. This resort would be fabulous if they invested a little money and updated. The North Shore of Kauai should not be missed!

We had an amazing stay @the Hanalei Bay Resort. We flew from Calif. for our first visit to be married. The hotel grounds and staff are AMAZING, the landscaping is truly remarkable. We had booked a local "cottage" half way into our trip and returned to Hanalei Bay Resort (HBR) after finding it in horrible condition, they pulled some strings and found us an even nicer room than we were in originally. Will return annually!

My husband and I stayed at this resort in August for our honeymoon. The location is one of spectacular beauty on the north side of the island, which tends to be quieter and less "touristy". We heard that is more rain on the north side during the winter, but during our weeklong stay, it only rained one day in the morning. The beach is a short walk away down a private path and snorkeling is some of the best on the island. Some of the best golf courses on the island are also very close. The pool is more like a beatiful lagoon, with waterfalls spilling into it and the Bali Hai Restaurant in the hotel has an incredible view of the bay - book a sunset reservation. As far as the individual rooms, you should be careful to find out what type you are staying in. Most of the resort are time shares, with different owners, so the accomodations can vary. We stayed in a room billed as a suite with Kitchen. After we went to the time-share presentation we discovered that many of the units are really one bedroom, two bath condos. The owners split them up and rent one side with the bedroom and bathroom as a hotel room, and the other side with the living room, kitchen and bath room as a suite. This meant that the side we rented (living room) had a pull-out sofa bed, instead of a real bed (not too comfortable, as you can imagine). This was not clear when we booked the travel, so we were a little disappointed. Other than that, the room was clean and the furnishings acceptable.

Our overall experience was very disappointing for several reasons: The first thing we saw as we got of the car was an invitation to a timeshare presentation. The receptionist was very unfriendly and told us nothing about the resort. She barely had time to tell us how to get to our room. We discovered the path to the beach by chance (the map we were given was too small to read easily). Our garden view room was dark, and on the ground floor. It looked out on dead grass (with all that rain???) and some sort of animal trap. The pool was very cold and the water had several floating bees on top. The food at Bali Hai was good, but certainly not the best in the Princeville/Hanalei area. We will definitely not return.

The best part of this hotel is waking up to a beautiful view of the mountains, sipping your coffee on the patio, and watching the bird show every morning. The bed was really bad and the pillows were hard and flat. The restraunt was pricy but very good. Service only so so. They offer a discount on activites with a timeshare tour, but did not push when we declined. Take your own toiletries as they only furnish soap and shampoo, no conditioner or lotions.

The Hanalei Bay resort property was a very beautiful setting. I would like to warn travelers going to the hotel of what I learned. The actual waiter at the Bali Hai restaurant confirmed that the hotel guest are usually people with owned time shares...that is why the service is not usually up-to-par with other resorts. I experienced the lack of ALOHA...first-hand. First of all, prepare for a VERY late check-in. EVERYONE checking in the day we arrived could not get into their rooms till 4:30pm....and I was told this was the usually check-in time. Secondly, the rooms ONLY have a sofa sleeper that is very uncomfortable. Next, when it came time to go to the hot tub and pool, we were told 2 days in a row that we couldn't because they ran out of beach towel. Although they told us that they didn't allow hotel towels at the pool, we took them anyway because our whole trip was based on laying out at the pool and dunking in the hot tub for relaxation. Lastly, don't even think about sleeping in late- the huge number of Roosters on the property start their morning noise at the crack of dawn and it continues to the afternoon! Remember, this is paradise so the scenery is breathtaking- but the comfort and customer service level sorely lacks!
