The worst place ever! Poor services, rules that dont make sense like towel service (one towel per person, and if lost, charge) is open until 6PM whereas pools are open until 7PM. Sales people and different representatives constantly annoying, long lines to make reservations for restaurants, limited sittings in the restaurants, nothing to eat between 3PM and 7 PM, cheap limited drinks, leaky roofs everywhere, no coffeemakers in rooms, rats the size of small house cats - that and more is what you get at the Occidental. Save yourself from the worst vacation! Choose a different resort!

My partner and I stayed at this hotel for 8 days. I found it to be somewhat lacluster. I wasn't impressed at all. The hotel is rated as a four star hotel, it's more like a three. I was not amused by having to stand in line for an hour to make reservations for their a la carte restaurants. I've stayed in many hotels in the Dominican Republic, this one is by far my least favorite.

There was no such thing as service in this hotel. From having to take your own luggage to your room and dealing with ants in your room, this hotel was not the 4 star quality we expected. Puerto Plata has so much more to offer for the same amount of money spent at this hotel. If Puerto Plata is your destination, seek accomodations elsewhere.

I spend two nights at this location. I was a bit disappointed with the food. I was ok. But I guess I was expecting something grander. My room was very spacious and many of the accommodations were within walking distance (i.e. beach, disco, casino, little mall).

The hotel was great. Everyone was really nice from the moment that i got there until the day I left. I met new and nice people. The food was great too, a lot of different things to choose from. The only thing was the rain, but that didnt have nothing to do with the hotel. I had a great time and I'm planning on going back next summer.

We really enjoyed staying here. We were scheduled for Cancun and to cancel last minute and booked this place w/o much research. We were never dissapointed. Only complaint I could possible have was there was no drinking water or ice machine on our floor. Let me tell you - The food in the buffets were fantastic ! and plenty of to choose from. Their reservation specialist for excursions was wonderful. The fun club kids(young people)were a delight and kept us intertained. The nightly shows were awesome ! The 1st night we saw the 'Fantasy Show' which was Las Vegas style dance girls and guys. The night before we left, we saw 'Broadway Show', which was a collage of broadway shows. The beach was beautiful and everything clean as a pin. They are very generous with the alcohol in the drinks. I hope they pay their people well, because they deserve it and more.

We were on the 3rd floor and water pressure was always a problem, notified management about this problem 3 times and never was fixed. Bring your own towels, pool towels are only one per day. Food was good but not what we expected from a 4 star hotel. Employees attention were excellent, kids club is not well organized, not many option for dinner, three restaurant use reservation and capacity was a problem. Waited two days for the TV remote control, they didn't have many available.

This hotel does not deserve 4 stars. The pool is nice and exterior of the building is well kept. The sitting area in the lobby is not well ventilated and is not air conditioned. It was too hot for comfort in June. August must be unbearable. Upon arrival, the desk did not have my CONFIRMED reservation, but gave us a room anyway. I thought it was the "leftover" room since the drapes and bedding was mismatched, no clock, no iron, and the spot for the mini bar was a vacant hole. I later found out from other guests, this was a typical room. I found the food to be better off site. If I return to the DR, I will try another hotel.

At first we were disapointed with our room. It probably was first class twenty or so years ago. The first night our AC didn't work. Asked the front desk to fix the next day and they did! The location of the hotel is really good! We loved the beach! Lots of action and people to watch. The food was very good. The drinks horrible. All the pina coladas, rum punches, etc were made from a mix! Horrible. Only thing I liked was gin & tonics.

Hotel was adequate, but certainly not a 4 star hotel. Could not get a second towel at the pool?! Could not eat in several of the restaurants because no reservations were available even though we stayed a week and tried to make reservations on the morning of our second day. Food in the buffet restaurant was plentiful, but not imaginative, although I believe they tried hard. All of the hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Except for the towel attendant who was downright nasty. The rooms were OK, but certainly nothing special. Furniture is badly in need of replacement. It took more than 3 days to get some additional hangars in our room. But overall, with some renovations, and good weather, the resort would certainly rate 3 stars.

Starting out on a positive note... we will say that the pool area was beautiful and the Oriental & Mexican restaurants were good. As we have a 6 & 12 year old, we were unimpressed by the "kids club" that seemed to open irregularly with no planned event for the kids. The room, while spacious enough was not above a 3-star hotel and the roof leaked every time it rained. The food was plentiful, but was somewhat tiresome after 3 or 4 days. The golf course within the Playa Dorado Resort Complex was beautiful with an asphalt track that served as a nice running/walking path. Overall we had a good time, but I would not return or recommend it to friends.

I went through 6 room changes in 11 days. There were numerous leaks and floods in my rooms. Am I unlucky or do all the rooms have problems? Some of our clothes got wet one night as a small river snaked from the closet throuh our room. The rooms have some sort of mold and mildew which I believe is a health hazard-I developed an allergic cough. One room had pillows that smelled like a combination of mold and urine-disgusting!!!After a few days they knew at the front desk and the guest services desk because I spent a good deal of time yelling and complaining to them. There are more horror stories but there isn't enough room here to post. The only positive thing is that the food and drinks was plentiful. They should rename the hotel chain-Occidental to Accidental. My advice is to stay clear of this place unless you are a glutton for punishment!!!

This is a quite nice place to hang your coat and jump into your speedo for a week or so. Relatively good facilities, food and beach with lots of rocks (supposedly coral reef). You will have things to do throughout a day and restaurants to choose from in the evening, but make reservations early!!!!Very friendly and helpful staff.Over all a nice joint.

We got a great deal for 6 nights, all inclusive. It's nice when you can just check-in and not worry about the small stuff. You do have to get in line for the ala carte diners but not a big hassle.People come here to hang out and drink, although we didn't do a lot of the latter we still got our money's worth. Relax, smile and enjoy the weather - don't be loud/obnoxious and you will have a good time. Take the tours drop some money on tips - you are on vaca. I have stayed at 5-star hotels and this deserves it's 3.5-4 star rating. We ate 'everything' at the buffet and never got sick - really. But, if you have a delicate stomach, just as anywhere else - I am sure you will get sick.
