The hotel was dated and needed some work. The staff and location were great. Close to the beach and shopping. If you have high standards, this is probably not the place for you

Well after reading these reviews I was a bit nervous about my stay at the Bahia Mar, but I was pleasantly surprised. I can agree with some of the complaints, and I would not recommend this hotel to just anyone, the fact that we were young adults and on vacation, this hotel worked just fine. We spent 4 nights in a standard room (not in the tower) and we were on the 4th Floor, I do have to say that if I had to stay on the first floor, I would have had a pile of complaints, it did smell, so if you do plan on staying here, request a room on a higher level. The room was fine, although the resort as a whole is showing its age, the room was not spotless, but it was clean. I also found the elevator to be a bit unsightly, and the stairwell did have a strange odor. The staff was nice, not overly helpful. If you have high demands when staying at a hotel, this is not the place, the concierge was hardly available and requests for extra towels and pillows were taken with a him and haw, but such things do not bother me, so it worked out just fine. The pool was clean, and enjoyable, and the walkway to the beach was very helpful. I also loved the fact that the water taxi stop was only a few steps away. I also enjoyed the deli/market, and I found the sandwiches to be reasonably priced. The only complaint is they close fairly early (6pm in the summer). To sum it up it is a great place to stay if you have low maintenance requests and can bear some dirt here and there.

After reading some really inflamatory reviews on this hotel, I was beginning to re-think my decision to stay there. However, I'm glad we stuck to our original plan and was quite satisfied. The hotel was clean and quiet, and you cannot beat it's location or views. It's five or so miles from the airport and the cruise ship terminals are within two miles. This is an older section of hotel row, but it has been pretty well kept up. They have recovered from the hurricanes of last year, but staffing and amenities are a bit sparse compared to other hotels/resorts in this price range where I've stayed. The desk clerk said they have had a hard time filling positions since the hurricanes. They did not have a concierge and I never did decipher where they had the buffet breakfast. There is also no hotel shuttle. It looks like they just spent a good deal of money on new fitness equipment in the gym, there's not a spa and I don't believe a hot tub on site. There is a deli/convenience store on the property and you are within walking distance of a number of really good restaurants. Housekeeping was really good. The bedding is a little cheap (not all cotton sheets like I prefer). If not for the location, I would have thought it a little overpriced for the lack of amenities, but overall, I'd stay there again. Also, you need to realize south Fla. is not an inexpensive place to visit.

Great location for vacation in Fort Lauderdale. Right in the Marina and directly across the street from the beach with their own pedestrian bridge. Nice pool and lounging area if you don't wnt to deal with the sand. Las Olas shopping and restaurants are within one mile and you can drive or use the convenient water taxi which is very cheap and lots of fun.

My daughter and I went to FL for a quick 4 day trip during her spring break from college, and I booked the trip at the last minute. The Bahia Mar was in a great location for us, as I didn't want to rent a car during our stay. It was a 5 minute walk to 'where the action' was, but the hotel itself was quiet. It was right across the street from the beach, and on the other side was the intercoastal waterway. It wasn't anything fancy, but for us it was perfect!

Stayed from 26 Dec 05 to 31 Dec 05. They let us check in early since we arrived at noon. It's very accessable to most of the Ft Lauderdale south beach (use the the Water Bus for $7 a day!)with plenty to do. The hotel was beat up by hurricane Wilma, but the staff seemed glad for our business. The room was clean and well maintained, we don't see why others complained so much! We'll come back to Bahia Mar.

This hotel, while still coping a bit with the damage from Hurricane Wilma, was very nice. Good staff, nice room with a balcony and ocean view, and convenient parking and wonderful location near the "Waterbus" that can take you (slowly) all over the place. We didn't care for the hotel restaurant, where we had breakfast. Very overpriced! But there's a little Bahia Mar deli across the parking lot that has bagels, eggs, pancakes and good coffee.

Hotel was in a great location, across the street from the beach, close to nightlife, and waterbus is a big plus to get around, 7 dollars a day for all day pass. Try stop # 1 Shooters, and bootleggers great places to eat and see your favorite sports teams from back home, 32 tv's with directv, my kind of place. Would stay here again in the future.

This was the second time I've stayed at the Bahia Mar in Ft. Lauderdale. While some of the other reviewers are right that the buildings are showing their age, it's still a very comfortable hotel. And, the location is great. Right across the street (with an overhead bridge to walk there) from the beach and ocean. Also easy walking distance to the shops, restaurants and bars along the beachfront. Service and staff at the hotel were also excellent.

The Bahia Mar Beach Resort was probably a really wonderful hotel in it's heyday. It's still nice, the rooms are comfortable, but it hasn't been updated in probably 30 years, and there is definite "deferred maintenance" that needs to be done. To be fair, some of the needed mainenance is from hurricane damage due to the recent storms (some of the windows in the lobby and bar are still covered with plywood - this is not what I am referring to in my comments). Service is mid-level, the one and only restaurant is overpriced - but it was still an enjoyable place to stay. The rooms were fine, the price was right, and you can't beat the location.

We only stayed here for one night, on the tail end of a family visit. I booked it for the good review scores and location. It is basically on the beach, near basketball courts and shade trees, with a walkway to get there. We had an ocean view room. The view was great but the room shows the hotel's age. The sliding door didn't want to close all the way and the a/c unit was very loud. Still, it was clean and the staff was very nice. It's a great option if you plan to spend a lot of time on the beach. If you're not a beach person you could probably get better deals closer to downtown.

I was satified with the stay at the hotel, and was surprised that everyone moved so quickly to make the stay nice after the hurricane. The hotel staff were friendly and chatty. The bedrooms were small and comfy. The decorum was a bit out of date and needed to be updated with fresh furniture and colors. The view from the tower room in which we stayed was simply breathtaking. The pool and tiki bar was delightful, but the drinks are pricey. The bartenders were nice and ready to to give you useful info about whats in the area , and how to arrive there.

The Bahia Deli had very good food as well & it was so handy if you just wanted a sandwich for the beach. The swimming pool was great. Their brochure actually dipicts what the hotel looks like. Hurricane Katrina came right after we arrived. We were kept informed by management of any evacuation that may occur for the hotel. We will be going back next year. We highly recommend this hotel and booking through Expedia is a very good cost saver.

We stayed there twice on the front and back end of our cruise. We showed up the first time at the hotel at 3 pm and were curtly told that check-in wasn't until 4. We did not get a room until after 5 - with no apology. We sat in the lobby and were ignored by the staff. The room was old and dingy- view of the parking lot. Bathroom was grim. We did not get the king we reserved. Before I left, I asked them if we could pre-reserve a king for our return which they agreed to do. The second time we did not arrive until after 6 pm. They told us (curtly again) that there were no king size beds. They took us up to the room - again across the parking lot to the older building, it had not been serviced and had been smoked in. We stood around in the hallway with the poor bellman waiting for the front desk to figure out where to put us. Finally they called and said to bring us back to the main hotel (shuttling across the parking lot in 98 degree weather) where we were put into another room. These rooms (in the main hotel) were far nicer than the rooms in the other building. The bell people and a nice concierge are the only thing I liked about this hotel. I would recommend spending a little extra money in Fort Lauderdale to stay in one of the larger hotels. My husband and I are well traveled and we are always very nice to service people and we are very understanding when things go wrong and people are apologetic. These people do not have a clue.

Spent the past week (8/13 through 8/20) at the Bahia Mar. It was an all around wonderful experience. I have to admit that after reading many of the reviews on here I was very hesitant about staying there. We experienced NONE of the problems listed below. Our room was very clean when we arrived and housekeeping kept it that way. It was also ready for us by promised check in time... which is 4pm. Hallways were clean and the grounds were also well kept. The front desk and concierge where always there to answer our questions, make recommendations, and assist with plans. The pool was very nice, food was good, drinks where great! :) The walkway to the beach is VERY convenient. It saves you from crossing A1A which can be very busy at times. The Water Bus stops right at the Marina and is an excellent way to travel. It will save you a ton of money and it goes to all the major attractions in the area. It is also a great way to see Ft. Lauderdale. They even offer day trips to South Beach. This was a steal for the for the price. I would highly recommend it!

When we arrived, our room was very stuffy and humid, despite the a/c being on the highest level. We thought to go swimming and hoping it would air out. It didn't, and we called and moved to a different room, which was much better. Staff was not overly friendly, however not rude either. The deli was good and the pool grill/bar had wonderful food (the best we had on the entire trip!). The chicken quesdillas are a must! As for the city, we went in mid-summer, which is off-season, however, on two nights we were "kicked out" of bars by 11pm due to not being busy and closing early. Somewhat of a disappointment.

I was generally satisfied with the hotel. The room was a little dingy and not the greatest, but we didn't spend much time in the room anyway. I will say that the pool area is very nice, the staff was friendly, and the deli/market on the premises is great. It has everything from reasonably priced food to beach towels to sunglasses and toiletries. Once we discovered that place, we got breakfast and lunch there everyday and brought it to the beach. We ate breakfast in the hotel restaurant once and the food wasn't that good and a little overpriced, so I would skip that. Also, the water taxi that takes you all over Ft. Lauderdale stops right at the Bahia Mar, so it was very convenient. Overall, I would probably stay there again. If you are on a budget, it's a decent place to stay.

We stayed in one of the tower rooms, and it was worth what we paid. It was clean and spacious, and the bed was what you would expect for a hotel. The 'balcony' views were great, but at 2x6 it was just enough room for two people to stand on. Housekeeping could be annoying for you late risers, but they did a good job cleaning up our mess. The beach is a short walk over a elevated walkway, just be sure to get there early if you expect to score a beachchair, which you will pay $10 a day for. Dining in the area is just okay, take the cab or water taxi downtown for a much better meal($15 cab). The pool bar was a bit overpriced, but the drinks tasty and strong, the pool was wet. Concierge services were top notch and overall we were very satisfied with out arrangments.
