Beach and pool were excellent. Food was good. Ate mostly at the Buffet. Tipping not necessary, but we did it anyway (dollar here and there) Leave tip for the lady that cleans your room. Reserve resturants the first day you get there. Make you you have enough cash. ATM`s will only give you Pesos. They will try to sell you timeshares, dont waste you time, its not worth it. Alcohol was not strong. Do not drink the tap water. Bottle water was plentiful. If you want to enjoy the breeze at night go up the stairs where the restaurants are, it is very nice there. Not too many activities for kids unless they enjoy the beach and pool.

My husband and I have 2 different opinions of this hotel. We both agree on the fact that the room was very outdated. The sheets were musky and the room was dingy. In the bathroom, there was rust around the tub and the sink leaked. Also, we had a 6 and 11 yr old with us, so be careful, at night there is porn on the TV on certain channels. The grounds were always pretty. There was always chairs at the pool and the beach. I felt that the pools were beautiful and clean, but my husband felt they needed more cleaning. Most people spoke English- we only had trouble with the housekeeping understanding what we needed. We read reviews prior to coming and took lots of $1 bills to tip, but honestly, we didn't receive any better service when we tipped (other than maybe extra towells). The beach was really nice. As far as the food..the Mexican rest. was awesome! The Italian was ok. They will not make reservations for under 18 in the Asian rest. which didn't make sense to me. At the main buffet by the entrance, they always seemed to run out of drinking glasses and plates. The buffet near the beach always seemed to have the best food. We really enjoyed the pizza and empanada stations. I felt that the hotel was beautiful other than the rooms. My husband felt they did the least they could to get by and it could have been better in his opinion. Also..one big thing we both couldn't stand was the people who constantly bother you for the excursions and timeshares.

We have visited many carribean islands and stayed at all inclusives, but the food and drinks here left alot to be desired as well as the service. The outside of the complex is beautifully maintained but the inside of the rooms need service. Our towel rack came completely out of the wall,(as well as our shower handle) and instead of fixing it they just hung the towels over the shower bar. Our friends had no water for 4 days in their room and had to shower in their families rooms. The breakfast/dinner buffet had alot of cultural items on it and the service was terrible. Just about every morning we had to get our own place settings, coffee cups after asking several times. Dinners/service in the restaurants was not much better but the food was edible. The beaches were beautiful and there was enough to do as far as water sports and social entertainment. The weekend was very congested with everyone coming over from Puerto Rico. It wasn't our best vacation, but it was relaxing and we had great weather. However, I would not go back there again.

Where do I start?? We showed up at the hotel at 4:00 p.m. Check-in time was 3:00p.m. We didn't get into our room until 5:00 p.m. The rooms definately need updated and our small fridge didn't work. The toilet would get stuffed up and water was leaking from the base of the toilet onto the floor. I asked for a room change but the staff said they would not allow me to change rooms until 3:00 p.m. of the next day eventhough I know that the hotel wasn't full. We had no bed spread (Not a big deal because we wouldn't use it anyways). We called housekeeping for wash clothes when we arrived at our room.. Waited a hour and still no wash clothes, called again and still never received wash clothes until the afternoon of the next day. The day before our departure we arrived at our room to find that the electricity had been shut off.. (Had to wait 2 hrs. to get it turned on.. It took several phone calls). The beach is very nice, but we would never stay at this resort again. We have traveled all over the Caribean and have never been so unimpressed with a hotel. The food in the restraunts was good (especially the Italian).. We were tolded we could only make reservations for 2 restraunts at a time by the staff.. This is not true as we found out 2 days later when trying to make reservations for the next 2 nights (All Restraunts were full).. The La Buffet is horrible..

If you're looking for a beautiful beach with pretty sand and clear blue water, Punta Cana is perfect. If you're looking for great service, individual attention, or luxury, this is not the place for you. Our room was satisfactory with a very loud AC and a toilet that worked when it felt like it, but we had a nice balcony and there was plenty of bottled water for us all the time. Unlike some of the other resorts I've read about, this one always had plenty of food, not necessarily great food, but plenty of it. The hotel puts on very elaborate shows at night and also offers entertainment on the beach during the day. If you go, I'd definitely recommend the snorkling excursion and the spa. The massages are to die for!

For the most part the room was fine. There were some problems. My brother developed red bumps on both parts of his lower legs. This may have been caused by bed bugs, which is not a good thing. On the day that it rained, the closet leaked and most of our clothing got wet. We kept asking the maid for face clothes and she brouhgt back bath towels. The communication was a barrier. Other than that the room was fine.

My wife and I stayed at the Occidental for our honeymoon, and it was wonderful. The lady at the front desk was VERY friendly, though she didn't speak great english (hey, I'm in her spanish speaking country). We were taken to our room on a golf cart and our bags were carried in for us. We were pleasantly pleased by the size and comfort of the room. My wife loved the bed, and it was very comfy (king size). The room was clean. The only problem was that our refrigerator didn't work--but we didn't really care since there were several bars and restaurants where we could get drinks at any time. We didn't drink the tap water, we only drank bottled water (the maid gives you 2 large bottles per day and bottles are available at any bar on the resort) and brushed our teeth using bottled water as well. The grounds of the resort are immaculate! The pools are well maintained. We had no problem getting towels, beach chairs or even shaded chairs. We didn't go out before about 10am. The beach itself was beautiful as well-White sand, clear blue water. We never felt unsafe while at the resort. There is no need to exchange $ because the US$ rules there. The food was just OK at the resort. There are complaints about service at the restaurants on here; tip a dollar here and there and you'll be well taken care of. Get up one morning to check out the sunrise. I live in Virginia Beach, and lived on the beach for some time--but the sunrise in Punta Cana is breathtaking.

This hotel was great and I thouroughly enjoyed my vacation there. The staff was nice and very helpful, and most people who interacted with customers were fluent in several languages (always including English). The grounds were beautiful, the beach was gorgeous, and we never had trouble finding a place to sit in the shade on the beach. The food was really good (I don't know about the restaurants... we stuck with the buffet after reading previous reviews). I had read that you have to tip the bartenders to get service but that was not true. I never even carried money with me, and I never had trouble getting service. Overall this was an amazing place to stay, cheaper in general than any of the other Caribbean islands and definitely worth it! We went on the Kontiki party raft snorkeling tour, and i HIGHLY recommend it, it was fantastic.

The resort was absolutely beautiful. The pools and beach are amazing. There are always plenty of chairs available and the pool/beach was not nearly as busy as you would expect for the end of May/early June. The grounds are beautiful and the room was more spacious than I had expected. The bathroom could have used some updating; however, the rest of our room was great. We did not have any leaks or any of these other problems others have had. Our tub did clog once while we were there; however, the issue was resolved in under a half hour. The staff was kind and helpful. My husband is fluent in Spanish, but I would have been able to get by without his help. The staff knows enough English to get by (far more than what these other postings would make you think). We did not get sick at all while on the vacation; however, both of us ended up very sick the moment we got home, and it has lasted for 3 days now. We believe it was from eating the fruits/vegetables that were most likely washed in tap water. We tipped our maid every day, but found it difficult to tip at the buffet (different servers will assist you during your meal) and the swim up bar (didn not want soggy bills). The service was great all around even without tips. The beach is beautiful at night with a nice cool breeze with hardly anyone there. Very private and romantic. We would definitely recommend this hotel and Punta Cana and would go again. This was an excellent price and we got more than we expected for our money.

My best friend & I stayed here for 4 days. The resort was bigger than expected,we were in building 13 which was about an 8 min. walk from the lobby and 2 mins. from the beach. Our room had a good view but would have been better had it not been for the abundance of palm leaves blocking our view of the ocean, but it was nice to sit out on the balcony. The room itself was decent & you're not going to spend much time in there anyway. The beach has the softest sand I have ever set foot on & the water was a beautiful blue. We speak Spanish & were able to communicate with the staff in both languages but what bothers me is people who travel to another country expecting everyone to speak English! You're visiting THEIR country, bring along an english-spanish dictionary! The food at the buffet was not the best (buffet food on a cruise is so much better!)The food at the steak & Asian restaurants was delicious (make reservations after checking in) The worst food was at the small eatery near the pool, the only thing I loved there was the soft serve ice cream which you can get yourself. The club Mangu is a short walk from the lobby. Great atmosphere & they do allow locals inside the club. The entrances to the club & the lobby as well as the beach are guarded so we didn't feel unsafe. Our overall stay wasn't bad, we had beautiful weather, staff was nice & beach was amazing but I prefer going on cruises.

First, the good. We like the grounds and the beach was great. Every day it was sunny, so bring the sunscreen. The employees were very nice to deal with, but the language barrier is very obvious. Our room was always cleaned (twice a day), but it was lacking over-all. The shower was not that nice, and we had a light burned out in the bathroom that was never fixed. The room was not impressive, just a room. The food was less than impressive over-all. Find the Pizzaria and try to eat at the restaurants, because the buffet was not too impressive (take some stomach medicine, you might need it). However, like I said, the people are nice, and the grounds are kept clean. It's not an elite resort, but if the food would have been better, it would have made the whole experiance a more positive one. It is what it is for the money. I would recommend it only if you can't afford a five star.

This resort was huge. We went in mid-May and it was about 25% full. Food was good. Make sure to book restaurants as soon as you get there, as Chinese and Italian get full early. Room itself was mediocre. We told the front desk that our patio door didn't lock and it never got fixed. The bathtub drained slow, so you'd be standing in water during your shower. I didn't mind too much because I sorta expect that at a hotel on the beach, where sand easily clogs drains. Best part of the resort was that the club on-site was THE party place in Punta Cana.

The only issue I had with the hotel is the 1-hour 'orientation' they conned us into attending which was only a sales pitch for their timeshare program. The restaruants were good, but nothing to write home about. We didn't have trouble making reservations for the restaurants. We didn't have problems getting beach towels. We always had hot water. We had 4 bath towels in the room each day. We didn't have problems with plumbing. Yes, we did have to walk a bit to get to the beach, but come on...It's a huge resort. We also had a very small language barrier issue but again, come on...your in a different country. We shouldn't expect them to know our language and everyone elses. It is a huge vacation spot for the Europeans and they can't be expected to know French, Dutch and German on top of English and Spanish. Over all it was great!!!!

I have never been so disappointed in my life! The pictures on this site are so discieving, that when we arrived at the resort I knew it was going to be a very long week. Very little English is spoken by the staff, communication was a big problem. The room are absolutely disgusting!! We were in three different rooms before we finally had one that didn't reek of mold and mildew. There is a dress code in the resturants that we were not aware of and we were forced to eat dinner in the same place all six nights. The beach is not any better than south Florida. When the weather is bad you are confined to the "compound". Would not recommended Punta Cana to anyone and especially NOT this resort.
