The Occidental Grand Cozumel is fantastic. I was on a seven day vacation with my wife and daughter (age 10) and loved every minute. This was my first all inclusive so I was expecting the worst. To my delight everything was great including the drinks and food. I was very impressed with the staff as they all tried to make our stay very enjoyable. In fact my daughter exchanged email addresses with our waitress. The dive shop (Dive Palacar) did a great job also. My wife and daughter loved the snorkel trips and I was really impressed with the Dive Master. We have decided to book the Occidental Grand for our summer vacation next year.

Although hurricane Wilma took a serious damage in Cozumel, the resort did a good job of recovering it. Most of the trees were naked without the leaves so we did not see the green oily puffy color as you seen on the pictures before the hurricane; Wilma blew them away. Many buildings collapsed and most of them were under construction. It looked sad. Once in the resort, on beach, everything changed. However, a lot the coral reef nearby the beach were damaged. Watch out for the timeshare salespeople at the airport and the resort. When we were there, they lured us with tour discount. We spent 5 hours instead of 90 minutes as we attempted to purchase it. We were there for 5 days on the Memorial weekend 2006. After all, we enjoyed the resort, the beach and the activities except for the A/C. Our A/C has one temperature between 50 degree and 85 degree. The maids did a good job cleaning up the room. The buffets were good and different each day although the taste is not the best but good enough for the 2nd round. There are a lot of flies in the outdoor buffet on the beach. We ate there a couple of times and did not get sick. I spoke to the local people; they said all the tress leaves should grow back after the raining season this year. I would go back to Occidental in the future if the price were right.

Low score given on comfort due to the fact that the bed was extremely hard and firm. Otherwise the hotel was a fantastic place to stay. I particularly liked the fact that the hotel was somewhat secluded, being located on the more undeveloped end of the island.

I stayed at the Grand with wife and our 2 kids (8 and 10) for 8 days over the Easter holidays. Cozumel was hit hard by Wilma. Nature is coming back but damage is visible everywhere. The Grand has been restored rather well and no building damage is visible, though plant life is rather stunted. The beach is very nice and the snorkeling right off the beach is impressive. The pools are tame at 4 feet throughout. We tried sea kayak, hobbie wave. The kids also parasailed and went underwater in a submarine. Try snorkeling at Playa Corona for a change of pace (3 miles from the hotel); free but don't forget to tip on the way out. There are 5 restaurants on site but we ended up eating at one of the 2 buffet style places. Food was very good. Drinks were readily available and you could pick up multiple drinks at once. The on-site dive shop is very good. You can get PADI certified within one week (I did) and they run multiple dives each day and night. The staff was great, safety conscious and considerate. All dive sites are very close to the hotel (5-10 minutes). The hotel runs a night time animation every night around 9 PM. It ends promptly at 10 PM. The disco is open late but in general, the place shuts down around 10:30 PM. Go to Senor Frog in town or in Playa de Carmen for late night fun. The room was nice with a big bathroom, a balcony to dry your gear and more water pressure than most hotels. The beds were new and hard. The stay was a good value overall.

It was so great to have unlimited foods and drinks while staying Occidental Grand, which would be the best part of this trip. However, the hotel site was not fully recovered from the hurricane a few months ago, so there were some unfriendly views here and there. The worst part of this hotel was that the room we stayed were connected with the next door room by a door that has some holes like toilet door, so very little noise from neighbor room like telephone ring, door knocking, or television sound and so on.. could be heard very vividly. One more thing is that it was still not very hot season there, so I could hardly bare the air-conditioning. Without air-conditioning, the room atmosphere was too humid to get a sound sleep. I wish if the air-conditioner had a function of de-humidifier without chilling the room temperature. Maybe if it gets hotter so that air-conditioner is fully used, humidity would be not a problem. :)

We loved the Occidental Grand. The grounds were beautiful, and the rooms were kept spotlessly clean. We went as a 'couples escape' but would be a great place to take the kids, it is such a safe and friendly environment. Most of the food was really good, the dinner buffet was just average, but breakfast and lunch were very good. Steakhouse and pizza place were especially good.

The best part of this resort is the wonderful dive shop, Dive Palancar, right at the beach. Most dive sites were less than 15 minutes away, many 5 minutes away. The dive staff are professional, skilled, service-oriented and friendly. We had great dives with them. Hotel was fine except for check-out which was unpleasant--they locked us out of our room exactly at noon. (Noon is the check out time.We were on our way back from lunch and were 10 minutes late.) When a maid let us into our room to get our bags, we found that the phone service had been cut off so that we were unable to call for a bellman to help us with our bags and gear. Unpleasant ending to an otherwise great week.

My wife and three (adult) daughters stayed here 2/17-2/21. I wish it could have been longer, and we would like to return. Only three weeks after reopening, one had to look hard to find hurricane damage. The staff was friendly and efficient, and very quick to respond to any requests. The grounds were immaculate, and kept that way by constant attention. We stayed at the Royal Club, which was very nice, although I think that we would have been almost as pleased if we hadn't. (This is part due to the fact that the hotel was not very full - likely due to many post-Wilma cancellations - so there was little contention for things such as the "reservation only" restaurants.) Nonetheless it was very nice to have the royal Club concierge make these reservations, and the (restricted) Royal Club dining room was very good. Overall, we really liked the "all inclusive" benefits (one never needed money, and could eat and drink wherever one wished), although we did feel that the food - at various restaurants - athough good, wasn't what one would expect in a really good restaurant.

My wife and I spent our honeymoon at this hotel. I have never been treated so well in my life. We would come back from the beach and there would be animals on the bed made out of towels with flowers scattered around them. My wife simply mentioned to a staff member we were on our honeymoon and the next day the phone rang. They said to open the door they had something for us. They brought us little bite sized cakes and chocolates with a nice congratulations card. we will definately be going back.

Enjoyed our first 4 days of our stay (before Wilma). Nice quality resort. Food menu gets alittle redundant. The staff however, excelled in caring for the guests during Hurricane Wilma--can't say it was pleasant in the shelter, but I felt they were excellent in trying to make us safe and comfortable considering circumstances. The diving was great as usual. I'd recommend this hotel

The hotel has nice grounds and the beds were very comfortable and the A/C worked very well. The food was OK, you could only eat at the specialty restaurants a certain number of times based on your length of stay, otherwise you had to pay. I didn't care for that. There is also no swim up bar. This was actually a big inconvienience. The cups they give you dont hold very much so we had to take turns going to the bar. They have a waiter but it takes quite a while to get drinks. I have stayed at the Iberostar previously and liked it a little better.

The breakfast food is cold and i have a hard time eating french fries with pasta which is how the lunch buffet is served. But the diving is wonderful, Dive Palancar is a great dive shop is a blast. The trip to the reef takes just a few and the wild life is great. I love Cozumel, we have been at this hotel twice. They didnt meet me at the door with Champaigne this time so I served myself. But beware of the Mosquitos!!! OUCH! I am from MN and they are still bad in Cozumel... We booked the Royal Club and it was very nice. It does offer room service, but only from the Royal Club restaurant which has a limited menu that does not change. It also allows you to book the nice restaurants in advance. It was sad to see others in the cattle lines trying to get reservations in the morning. Bring lots of bug spray, the mosquitoes are everywhere. There are also bees at the outdoor bars and eateries. The RC pool is tiny. There is no swim up bar in any pool.

No signs for where to check in, check out, banking, dinner reservations, etc. Dinner reservations, should have been able to make over phone. Instead you have to go to check in between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m to make your reserved dining selections. Those restaurants were really good though. Best one was Los Olivos. Pizza restaurant staff was very unfriendly. No room service, no food to your rooms from Pizza place, etc. Overall not very friendly service.

First time to Cozumel and Occidental. My husbnad and I stayed 6 days, 5 nights. We rented a jeep, went deep sea fishing, and snorkeling. All were more than worth the cost. Tip: Book the fishing with the guys at the hotel, instead of $300 per person it was $175.00 for both of us. Snorkeling through the hotel was also alot cheaper, and an amazing experience. The jeep only cost $25 with a visit to the sister hotel for promotion. The rooms are clean, and very large. The staff were all pampering and ready to please. We were greated with champayne, and continued until the taxi took us to the airport. The food was great, often the buffet was as good as the restaurants. The Meditterainean was the best and a must experience. Was a great experience in every aspect and well worth the expence. We will be going back next year, and bringing our children.

There weren't any rooms on the water, but it was a short and beautiful walk to the beach. The food was a little disappointing, but I had high expectations. The guacamole was the kind you can buy pre-packaged in the store. Very un-Mexican! And they seemed to like to play Enya a lot at the pool. The drinks were delicious, not very strong, but hey, you can have as many as you want! We'd definintely go back, although we might try a more inexpensive resort next time and spend more time venturing around the island on a scooter.

We had a great time at the Grand Cozumel. The things that were most important to us - the beach, pool & recreation opportunities were great. The grounds were beautiful too. The food was quite good. The specialty steak restaurant was very good - with fine beef that had interesting sides dishes, sauces and great service. The other restaurants had a good variety of food during dinner. Lunches were pretty basic. One day we caught two tuna and the main buffet restaurant - Las Posadas - did a great job of preparing it. The service in other aspects (room service, front desk, etc.) was good too. We had only two concerns: - The ventilation system in our building (which in other aspects was very nice) projected a terrible musty smell. - The phone service was very poor. We had friends at a nearby resort who tried to reach us but could not leave a voice mail message. When we called the operators to complain, they sent someone out but then told us everything was OK. Watch out for the rental car service who has a desk at the resort - some of their cars are in very bad shape and the seat belts don't work.

Service is greate especially when you can speak the language. The resort grounds were well kept and the gardens were beautiful. Favorite a la carte resturant was the Sonora Grill. Even the buffet style restaurants had good selections and variety day to day. My biggest complaint is the musty smell in the room. When I got back from the trip anything in my suitcase had the musty smell and the air conditioner was quite loud. Bigger and better quality pillows would have been a plus. Otherwise we loved the place. Good beach, pools and entertainment at night. Although the hotel was full it did not feel crowded. We also found out after we got there that for a la carte restaurants you could only make one reservation per two night stays. Not a big deal since food was good at the buffet but would have liked to have known this before hand.
