For the type of rooms we had the price was out of line. Iunderstand there was a convention at the time ,but the rooms were small and the noise level outside was loud.Over we like this motel.

It's an old hotel, but some may find this desirable. It is definately clean and well kept. Our room was small. It was basically good for sleeping only. This is not a bad option for the price and location. But if comfort and luxuary is your thing, then this may not be the place.

I only stay in hotels with high speed internet in the rooms. This hotel said it had dataports in every room. They are dial up ports. I must have misread the description and put high speed internet and data ports in every room together. They do, however, have high speed internet in the lobby. you need your own laptop with wireless capabilities though. Also the TV was very old looking. The bathroom looked old, and the water was cold. I had to take a shower at a friends house. You get what you pay for. I will not make this mistake again.

If you like architecture and want to pay a fair price stay here. It's more like staying in somebody's Victorian house than a hotel. For the price it's a good deal for a short stay. The clientele is students and professors from nearby colleges, and somebody was always sitting in the historic lobby on a laptop. The hotel is very clean and partly renovated, like the carpeting and new bathrooms. The rooms are old, but more comfortable than any modern overpriced place including real beds (not slabs) with 1970s furniture in good condition, and old TVs that have perfect cable reception. New watercolor prints on the walls, 15-foot ceilings. For a couple days at a bargain price it works.

After reading a number of reviews on this hotel I didn't know quite what to expect. What I found was a good hotel for the lowest price available downtown. Our room was clean and well kept, our limited contact with the front desk was prompt, and housekeeping came both days we were there. The location is great, with a subway stop only a block away and grant park as the front lawn. The walls did seem a little thin, and there were no lavish extras, but the experience was a satisfactory one and I would recommend it to anyone who is willing to stay someplace that doesn't qualify as luxurious. The picketers didn't bother me.

I went there with my mother and we booked a smoking-room. Well...it felt like they "pushed" us away because we were smokers. We had to go through two big doors to a small corridor and there was our small, small room !! I thought they had bigger rooms but I guess because we were smokers they gave a room not that good. The service was very good and I cant complain about it. But we found a remote control under one bed and two caps in the room. So the cleaningservice could be better. But Im that kind of person that can just laugh at those kind of stuff. It is a very nice hotel and very beautiful and the staff is great. Welcome to Chicago's oldest hotel (110 years old)!!!!

The hotel itself is very historic and charming. The rooms could be a bit nicer, but very comfortable. The shower took awhile to heat up (10 min) and the TV was old with poor picture, but you are right in the heart of downtown on the lake. Other hotels in the area are 2X the price. Walking distance to aquarium, art museum and other attractions.

The room itself was nice and spacious for one person, but it lacked certain basic amenities that I come to take for granted in a hotel room these days. No bathtub - only a shower; a toilet that kept flushing for a long time afterward; coffeemaker didn't include decaf or tea options. This was tolerable, but things got worse when a student group of some sort began to occupy the rooms around me. They were smoking in the elevator, in the hallway outside the non-smoking rooms. Their behavior made a big difference in my enjoyment of my room.

Several amenities, such as internet access, are not available in all rooms. Many of those that are present are aging and not in the best condition. Elevators were very slow, and room service food was quite bland.Service was friendly but poor. Clocks had not been reset following Daylight Savings Time. Coupled with confusion on my part as to the time zone change, it caused me to be an hour late for a rather important appointment. Staff was only mildly helpful with other issues. Not recommended.

A very nice hotel at an affordable price. I was very pleased with the appearance of the hotel and quality of the service. Clean rooms, cozy bar, friendly staff, good central downtown location; very close (in most cases, walking distance) to Art Institute and other museums, Shedd aquarium, many good restaurants, theatres and lots of shopping. I don't know if other area hotels operate similarly, but I was surprised to find that when I entered the hotel and went to check in, the guest next to me, and a few others, was smoking while checking in. The rooms are all non-smoking, but smoking is allowed on most of the first floor, including the lobby. As a smoker, I didn't mind, but some guests may find this uncomfortable. I intend to stay at the Congress Plaza during my next visit to Chicago, and I highly recommend it to others.

Our room was teeny tiny, cracked paint, stained carpet, moldy smell. Bathroom had a 2-inch "step-up" (even though there was a sign, it was an effort to not to stub toes), shower stall only, no water pressure and barely warm water at that. I haven't seen a vintage TV like the one we had - ever. The on-site Pub and restaurant aren't open. Everything seemed pretty run down. The front desk couldn't even make change for a ten-dollar bill at 9:00am so I could tip the doorman. The protesting is pretty obnoxious -there were about 15-20 blowing whistles and using all kinds of noisemakers.Thankfully, we were on a whirlwind museum extravaganza and only needed a place to crash for one night. I wouldn't want to spend more than 11 hours or so in this place.

Hey, the hotel was what it was, cheap, and in downtown Chicago. My fiance and I went down there to visit friends for New Years, and to tell them about our new engagement. We stayed two nights, one with my best friend and his girlfriend. The room was very big and the ceilings were very high. We had no troubles getting an iron or ironing board 20 minutes within request. We also got additional towels. The room did get incredibly warm throughout the night, and the shower took an extremely long time to get hot, but other than those minor complaints, I can safely say I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. We were there for New Years, and so New Years day, the elevator did have the unmistakable odor of puke and the puke powder. But that was understandable.

My girlfriend and I stayed for one night while in Chicago. The room was tiny and the tv must have been from the early 1980s, but it got a great picture. (I guess if it ain't broke, don't fix it?) The lobby was very elegant and debunked all the bad reviews I read prior to arriving. The picketers don't bother you and are a ways from the door. Plus, there were never more than 5 picketing at a time. The hotel rooms look like there were remodelled.....in 1960. Our room had paint chipping off the wood trim and doors and was very small. The room was clean, though, and we had clean towels and linens, as well. The worst part was the shower drain. Now I know some hotels are just old and have bad drains, but this was terrible. Unsanitary, too, as water in the tub came up our legs while showering. In all, a nice place for just a weekend or so. GREAT location and deal for the locale. Sadly, this hotel looks too big for its owners to maintain. Many meeting rooms in the looby were closed off permanently and the hotel rooms? Well, they just are from a different era :)

The Congress Plaza Hotel is located inside the Loop, about 5 blocks from Union Station. Although the hotel is clearly old and in need of some renovation, the service and quality of the room was good. This isn't an ultra high-class place, but it is a good solid hotel for a conference, business trip, or short vacation. I'd stay there again. The price is also a real plus - to get a similar rate at another hotel I would have had to stay out near the airport. Which reminds me - the train to O'Hare is only 2 blocks away.
