What to expect: A collection of contemporary art worth $1 million decorates the public and private spaces of this hotel. Works by Pablo Picasso and Kenneth Noland hang in the lobby on walls trimmed in marble and birds-eye maple; Miró lithographs dot the bookshelves in the hotel bar. On weekdays, guests include corporate travelers and dignitaries. On weekends, the hotel is a popular site for weddings. Amenity highlights: The Hyatt’s 3,220-square-foot fitness center has seven weight machines, four treadmills, three stair machines and exercise bikes, two cross trainers, and free weights. Saunas and steam rooms are in the locker rooms, located near a raised spa tub and indoor splash pool. Downstairs, 1201 Salon offers a range of spa treatments in addition to hair care (surcharge). Insider tip: The terminus for the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal is five blocks from the hotel in Georgetown. From there, the old waterway--now a national park--courses its way through 75 locks before ending 185 miles northwest. Visitors can ride mule-drawn barges on the water (surcharge). The towpaths along the canal are popular hiking and biking spots.
Melrose - Partially enclosed by two-story windows, the 105-seat restaurant specializing in American cuisine is a local favorite. In warm weather, the tables spill out onto a landscaped brick patio dominated by an antique bronze fountain. Melrose serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Melrose Lounge - Wood paneling, leather seats, and a wall of enclosed shelves lined with original works of art set a cozy atmosphere in this small bar overlooking the dining room. The lounge serves complimentary morning coffee.
