| Our room itself very nice. Front desk staff were very helpful and friendly, as was the service from the waitress who served us cocktails when we were sitting on the lovely and comfortable hotel veranda. The overall condition of the hotel could be better...it definitely has received its share of wear and tear over the years. We were very disappointed with the Cascades restaurant. We arrived at 7:30 PM on a Wednesday evening, and were seated immediately, but thereafter utterly ignored. We sat there for a full 30 minutes but were never approached by a server. Busboys came by a few times to fill (and then refill) our water glasses, but that was it. Several servers were moving about the room, taking care of other guests (I would estimate the restaurant was about 1/3-3/4 full) but none ever even looked our direction. After a half an hour of waiting, we got up and left (ended up driving down into the little downtown area to find a restaurant there). It really was odd. The couple at the table next to us, who were being served thier dessert just as we sat down, seemed to be having a similar issue. They finished and were desperately trying to get someone to bring them thier bill without much luck. When we left they were still sitting there...they'd gotten the bill by that time, I think, but were still waiting for someone to come back and pick up thier credit card so they could pay. The hotel has a lot of character and beautiful views...just go elsewhere to dine!

| This hotel was a major disappointment. For the amount we paid, I thought we were going to get something really special. Instead we got a very small, cramped room. It a had a miniature television and no full lenght mirror. It was a hot day and our room was next to an outdoor stairwell, so with the window open (no air conditioning) we heard clomping up and down the stairs and talking, laughing for most of the night. "The Shining" was supposed to be playing and was not. We checked with the front desk and the channel they gave us was playing "Dumb and Dumber" That's how we felt after our stay at this hotel.

| We went to Estes Park for a four-day stay & this hotel was the best part of the vacation (which is saying a lot in view of the gorgeous scenery in & around Estes). The hotel is charming; the staff is quite courteous and helpful. The 24/7 showings of "The Shining" (both versions) on one of the hotel TV channels was a little cheesy; though it was interesting to see the parts of the tv-movie version that were actually filmed there. By all means, if you ever have an opportunity, visit this hotel!

| The Stanley Hotel is Estes Park, Colorado is a wonderfully restored historic hotel. The staff and service is excellent, as is the food in the main restaurant. The hotel does a good job of playing up the hotel's history, even tastefully including the hotel's part in the film, "The Shining." Highly recommended.

| There are a string of good chain hotels up and down the same road as the Stanley hotel most are less expensive. We stayed at the stanley for the only night we were in Estes Park. We would stay at least a week end if we were there for a week just because it is such an experince to stay there.

| There's something about the Stanley. Built in 1909, the hotel is a bit tattered, but it tries really hard and that means a lot. While the paint is chipped on the outside, the rooms are clean, comfortable and updated somewhere in recent memory. We wondered about the exterior upkeep, but the staff was pleasant and helpful and the Sunday buffet has prime rib that is not to be missed. Only a quick drive from Rocky Mountain National Park, the Stanly starts your experience early with the occasional elk or two on the front lawn and the impressive Rocky Mountain backdrop. This is a popular setting for weddings. For those who enjoyed the Stephen King thriller, The Shinning, this is the hotel that inspired it. Supposedly haunted by the hotel's friendly founders, F.O. Stanley (inventor of the Stanley Steamer) and his wife, ghost tours are available. No spirits visited our room however and we had a great couple night's sleep with cool mountain breezes blowing through our open windows. We have stayed here a few times, love it, and will stay here again and again.
