W Chicago Lakeshore Amenities
This 33-story hotel overlooks Lake Michigan, and is two blocks away from Ontario Beach, the Navy Pier, and Northwestern University. North Michigan Avenue shopping is a half-mile away. The hotel offers a fitness center, an indoor pool, and a spa with massage and beauty treatments. A Mediterranean-influenced restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, while an intimate lounge provides panoramic city views.

The hotel has 12,000 square feet of conference space, including 15 event rooms and a revolving rooftop banquet room. High-speed Internet access (surcharge), audiovisual equipment, and event catering are available. Other amenities include 24-hour valet parking and 24-hour room service.

Valet parking:
$39 per 24-hour period. In/out privileges. Underground/covered/secured lot.
Fee may not include tax and is subject to change without prior notification.

Recreation
Guests can use a fitness center with cardiovascular equipment and an indoor pool. Two blocks away, Lake Michigan's lakefront path offers dog walking, jogging, bicycling, and inline skating. Volleyball courts along the beach are available for rental or pickup games. Bicycles and inline skates may be rented at several locations along the path. The hotel also leads yoga classes on the beach during warm weather.

Features
What to expect: Business travelers and younger vacationers appreciate the professional service and good choice of spots for mingling and relaxing, such as the indoor pool, the 33rd-floor Whiskey Sky bar, or the chic lobby bar, where margaritas are the specialty. The hotel's dramatic decor has a peaceful feel, with a mirrored waterfall behind the zig-zagged reception desk and smooth stones lining the corridors.

Amenity highlights: The hotel's 24-hour “whatever, whenever” service allows guests to request nearly anything, from a bottle of soda to a bottle of perfume, with no extra charge for delivery.

Insider tip: A pedestrian tunnel leads under busy Lake Shore Drive to the lakefront path. Guests who enjoy a morning jog can catch the sunrise over the lake.

Wave - Several steps down from the lobby, this open-design restaurant serves a full breakfast and Mediterranean-influenced cuisine at lunch and dinner. The dress is business casual, the atmosphere is laid-back, and the decor is ultra-chic with leather seating in ivory and red. An elevated section along the wall of windows offers booth seating.

Whiskey Sky - This dark, intimate lounge takes its name from its bird's-eye view of Chicago. Black is the prevailing fashion here, in keeping with the black-and-silver leather banquettes and black mohair club chairs. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the city presents a fireworks show over Navy Pier on Wednesday and Saturday nights, and the bar provides an excellent vantage point.

My stay at Chicago's W Lakeshore was a bit disappointing. By choosing to pay a premium for a room there, I was expecting something more special than what some of the other nice hotels in the city had to offer. Before talking about the negative, I should mention the positives. The staff was attentive and quite accommodating, the decor was attractive and modern, bathrooms were excellent and the toiletries of the highest quality. No complaints there, the W provides an entirely adequate room. Where the W Lakeshore fails is providing a premium experience. The building, which is simply a remodeled Holiday Inn (or something equally mid-market), has seen better days. The elevators, corridors and actual rooms were basically just painted-over and done up. You can see the years of wear and tear on every single scuffed up door and worn down elevator cab. My final gripe with the place has to do with the hotel's much-touted atmosphere. In reality it is packed full of suburban and Midwestern tourists in town for the baseball game (or other banal activity) not city types. I could personally care less about how modest the hotel's other guests might be, except that W goes though much effort to expose you to the verve of the place. It just so happens that drunken ex-frat guys from Ohio loitering about in their shorts and flip-flops most hours of the day is not my thing. All in all, you can do much worse here in the city but next time I will definitely be looking at the competition next time.

This was my second time at a W hotel, the first in New York. This hotel was dirty, the rooms are terribly furnished. I get trying to be "hip" but paper and cloth light fixtures don't get you there. Shutters seperatng the washroom from the bed are not a good idea. Not enough working elevators. In New York I had to take the freight elevator. Never again!

Nice stay. Good rooms, comfy bed. Whisky sky (lounge on 32 floor) was disappointing. Highly recommend using the italian market a block away for daily needs like water, snacks. Charges on these in the room are riduculous. They also tried to sneak a room charge on my card but quickly took it off once I called them. A hotel definitely for the young.

The hotel is not conveniently located. Access into and out of the property via car is difficult. Parking is over-priced. Response to guest questions or problems was slow. There was a problem with the tub, and we waited over 30 minutes and placed two phone calls to have the problem fixed. It was an inconvenient wait to take a shower in the morning.

While an extremely "happening" place, the place needs cosmetic work. The linens and room amenities were first class but the details needs some sprucing up. Woke up in the morning to things strewn up and down and about my hallway. The staff, very, very pleasant all, and helpful if you asked for something, also seemed nonchalant. In other words, they did not go out of their way to make you feel special.

Very Noisy. No sound proofing between rooms. The rooms are very nice but hallways etc are very worn. Was a little surprised since it was a W.

I found the service, both for check-in, and the rooms to be great. However, the size of the room and the quality of the fixtures could be slightly better. I got the impression that the dark lighting, funky music, and Asian-inspired fittings hid a slightly shoddy structure and what could otherwise be considered an unremarkable hotel. Still, my stay was fine. I wouldn't recommend to families, business travellers, or anyone wanting a quiet hotel - as the bar gets quite loud and is open past 3am.
