Towering modern hotel surrounded by gardens

Hotel Rey Juan Carlos I Amenities

The Royal Fitness is a sprawling health spa that spreads out in the gardens and below ground at the foot of the hotel. Only guests with room keys can gain access to the gym, which offers a range of exercise bicycles, other machines and weights, and is attended by training staff. In the same complex are two heated indoor pools and a 'wet zone' made up of jetted tubs, saunas, steam baths, aroma cabins, and hydro-massage showers. Guests can also enjoy a massage. Outside is a further heated pool, which is open year round (unlike the unheated outdoor pools elsewhere in the hotel grounds).

Around the ground and mezzanine floors of the hotels and facing into the stunning sight of the atrium are grouped the hotel's meeting and banquet rooms, which with their sliding walls can be grouped together to accommodate groups of varying sizes.

Recreation
The recreational activities listed below are available either on site or near the hotel; fees may apply.

Features

What to expect: This tower of steel and glass rises amid century-old gardens. As guests step into the lobby, they inevitably look up the 15 floors of the elliptical atrium. Two open glass lifts operate at one end. Paintings by local artists hang in the area around the Aris bar and are for sale. Increasingly families are being lured to this otherwise predominantly business-oriented hotel for weekend stays.

Amenity highlights: The Royal Fitness health spa offers a gym, with exercise bicycles, other machines, and weights. In the same complex are two heated indoor pools and a 'wet zone' made up of jetted tubs, saunas, steam baths, aroma cabins, and hydro-massage showers. Staff are on hand to help with training programs and massages. Outside is a further heated pool, open year round (unlike the unheated outdoor pools elsewhere in the hotel grounds).

Insider tip: This modern tower hotel was raised on the site of what was once a sprawling farm. All that remains of it are the hotel gardens, which are a century old - dating to a time when Barcelona was a much smaller and distant city. The carefully manicured gardens are an oasis of peace in a hectic city and open exclusively to hotel guests.

Café Polo - Buffet breakfast is served in this spacious ground floor restaurant. Splitting the restaurant in two is the long and extensive buffet table, which is also used for a lunch and dinner buffet. Renovated and expanded in 2003, the restaurant is divided into several different areas. Some have simple timber chairs and check tablecloths, others more elegantly laid out. Bright lighting and hardwood floors create a cheery atmosphere. Cuisine themes change daily, ranging from Catalan through Basque to seafood.

Chez Vous - A pair of voluptuous statuettes greet diners on the way into the hotel's fine dining area. Wine-red decor, paintings on the walls and low lighting set a cosy winter scene for enjoying an international menu with Mediterranean leanings.

The Garden - When the weather warms up Chez Vous' diners move outside to this leafy garden setting, which has become a big hit with local residents. The menu and service remains the same as those of Chez Vous, but al fresco.

La Terraza - A busy snack bar and café on the mezzanine level, La Terraza with its glass walls allows guests to look down into the hotel atrium while sipping a coffee at the small round tables.

Aris Bar - The hotel's nightlife takes place in this intimate piano bar. Low lighting, decor with red tinges and a hint of cocktail bars of old, with prints and other items on the walls. Cocktails and mixed drinks are the specialty of the house.

I heard from a colleque that this hotel was amazing. He had stayed there 3 months prior to my trip. On his recommendation I booked it. The Expedia rate was to good to pass up. I can see that when the hotel was built for the 92 Olympics it was probably spectacular. It is in terrible need of repair. You can see that it has a first class gym and spa. That needs some work but is OK. The rooms have worn carpeting, stained upholstery and faded bed spreads. The bathrooms are designed in a way that the shower is the size of a telephone booth. Dont drop the soap. It is not centrally located, but, an easy trip into the main city. They staff is very accomodating. If you want to save money, then by all means it is a great hotel for that. It is a pity that is has gotten so shabby

The hotel is quite far outside the center of the city, though public transportation is about a five minute walk. There are no cafes, pharmacies, or other stores nearby. The rooms were nicely decorated and well kept, though the beds were somewhat uncomfortable. We were unsatisfied with the concierge, who provided us with more than one inaccurate piece of information.

Nice hotel. Just have to take care about the distance to the turistical points of interest, that could stay a little distant. But if you have time, it's calm, beautfull gardens and pool areas.
