Recreation
Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and opened in 1966, the resort's 18-hole championship golf course meanders among palm trees, hibiscus, and bougainvillea and features uphill and over-water shots. A driving range lies adjacent to the course. The resort also includes four tennis courts (two lighted). Snorkeling and scuba-diving gear can be rented at a dive shop, which also offers instruction and guided excursions. A prime wall-dive site lies 100 yards offshore. Plentiful snorkeling sites are within swimming distance of the beach. Boat trips to 880-acre Buck Island Reef National Monument, which features an underwater snorkeling trail, depart from Christiansted 13 miles from the resort. Kayak tours of Salt River National Park, 6.5 miles away, are another popular St. Croix attraction. The recreational activities listed below are available either on-site or near the resort; fees may apply.

Features
What to expect: Established by billionaire philanthropist Laurance Rockefeller in 1986 as a tranquil retreat embodying the spirit of a Caribbean fishing village, the resort comprises a community of widely spaced two-story buildings with pitched red-steel roofs that pop out among the trees and flowering gardens. Though it's had a series of owners over the years, the resort remains a rest-and-relaxation destination primarily for adults—although children are welcome. Amenity highlights: A 0.25-mile beach furnished with lounge chairs includes hammocks strung between palm trees and provides access to snorkeling sites just offshore in the turquoise blue Caribbean. A large freshwater pool is sheltered by a wall painted with a tropical jungle scene and surrounded by a sundeck and lounge chairs. Two four-person spas provide soaking opportunities day and night. Insider tip: The only site within the U.S. territories that's been documented as a landing place for Christopher Columbus in 1493 lies 6.5 miles away in Salt River National Park.

| The hotel rooms have a view just about 50 feet from the ocean. You can hear the waves crashing in your room. However, unless you like to listen or watch the waves or scuba dive a lot, that is the only thing to do. The service was non existent and the food was awful. The tour of the island was to a rum factory and not worth the trip. No other things offered to do. For example: jet skiing, parasailing, etc. We would not go back!

| I will definitely come back to stay at this hotel. Expect to be served at the islanders pace however. Every thing goes at their own speed. The views were absolutely beautiful and the grounds were well maintained. The rooms were spacious and clean. Not all the electronic devices in the room worked however. It is a true island paradise.

| Apparently the Carambola is under new ownership and the two gentlemen that purchased it have no hotel experience. Unfortunately, it shows. It is somewhat isolated from the rest of the island and the taxi that services the hotel's guests was unreliable at best. We were stranded twice. The room was dark and musty and the handle to the hot water control on the sink broke off in our hand. Tropical climates breed different types of bugs, but I couldn't believe some of the things that got into our room! The beach is beautiful, but that is nature's doing. Every time we went to the pool, we had to request towels, even though they were supposed to be at the 'towel hut'. Needless to say, we'll never return and caution anyone who decides to book there.

| I stayed here for 7 days and it was a beautiful resort. The snorkeling right off the beach was amazing. The rooms were very clean and the service was great. The rooms are a little dark becuase of the wood interior, so open the shades so you know when morning arrives. You don't want to sleep too late and miss this beautiful place.

| The exterior of the hotel was dirty because of the salt water so close to the hotel, perhaps. But i was so not impressed by the exterior. The interior was old BUT fairly spacious. The towels had a dead insect in it but other than that, it was reasonable. It was hot inside our room because the fans above were not good. I didn't like the location of the hotel because it was WAY too far away from the good restaurants in Christiansted. We were not satisfied so we switched hotels.

| My wife and I just returned from a stay at the Carambola. It was our first trip to St. Croix. Overall, the experience at the resort was what we expected. It was an ideal place to sit on the beach and enjoy the tranquility and seclusion. The area was beautiful; the scenery around the Carambola was among the best we saw on the island. The rooms were laid out nicely but needed updating, which was ongoing at the resort. We were never disturbed by the renovations. I recommend getting a room on the second floor for the high ceilings, which made a big difference. The dining options were limited, but the food itself was okay. This is not the liveliest place on St. Croix, but that is part of its allure. You can truly get away from it all, while still being a short drive from Christiansted and Frederiksted.
