Admittedly, the hotel was under renovation when I stayed there, however, there were many other reasons not to recommend this hotel. I was given one of the finished, renovated rooms, with a gorgeous view of some dumpsters and a parking garage. The main draw of this hotel was the river-view, which I had reserved, but the receptionist asked me to "prove it" after failing to find this item in my reservation. Failing to produce my receipt (from Expedia) she advised me (all too impolitely) to take a different room. There was no restaurant/bar at the time, and the lobby is barren, so I can't really comment on these. The room I stayed in was indeed very nice, but obtaining service at the front desk was nearly impossible throughout the duration of my stay (and obtaining hand towels proved even more difficult)

Great location, very friendly staff, comfortable rooms. The hotel is in the process of renovating and upgrading to a condo/hotel facility. Guests are currently staying in the unrenovated rooms which do show signs of wear and tear.

Overall we had a good experience with Hotel 71. Great location with a fair price. The lobby has a great style and plays up-beat lounge music. There seemed to be a lack of city information, and no apparent concierge, but we did not pursue this. Room was large, with a nice view, and a nice bed. Parking cost was a bit high, but valet service was very good. (and this is Chicago after all) Other reviewers mentioned that there were no ice buckets. Not true. They just keep them by the ice machine for those who want them. Two minor complaints: 1. The elevators were slow during peak times; with up to a 15 minute wait. Other times, access was immediate. (Hence the score of 3 on overall condition/maintenance) 2. The walls are a little thin, so there is a little noise from the hallway. In the end, while we will try other downtown hotels, we would go back to Hotel 71 again.

Hotel 71 is close to many landmarks, the Millenium Park and meuseums. I enjoyed the good service and free apples at the registration desk. What I dislike the most was the smell of nicotine on hallways and my room (Chicago doesn't seem to enforce a non-smoking policy in restaurants and other public places), but I discovered that you can open the windows for fresh air.

Very good location for this hotel. Nice view on Chicago's river. The room was very comfortable. The only problem in this hotel is that it's hard to sleep as every small noise coming from the corridor seems to echo in your room as if people were sitting on the bed beside you.

The hotel was in a suberb location. Our resevation was secure. We arrived late from the airport. We had a corner room, which provided great views of the city. The front desk provided fresh apples daily. Moreover, the bellman secured our luggage upon checkout, so we could continue to explore the great city of Chicago.
