    Hotel Captain Cook Amenities
This hotel offers a central downtown location within three blocks of gleaming, modern office buildings, the Egan Convention Center, and the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts.

In addition to the upscale Crow’s Nest restaurant, with far-reaching views of the city and beyond, on-site dining choices include Fletcher's, specializing in seafood and Italian fare; the Whale’s Tail, popular for specialty coffees and pastries; and the Pantry, a casual café.

The 24-hour business center has three large workstations, each with computer and leather executive chair. High-speed Internet access is provided for a surcharge. Printers, a copier, and a fax machine are also available.

On the lobby level, 14 shops sell high-end goods, including European-made clothing, locally crafted jewelry, wildlife sculpture, and framed Alaska photographs.

Meeting space includes the remarkable Quarter Deck. Here, the horizontally paneled walls were salvaged from the teak deck of the USS Colorado, and the hanging lamps were formerly speaking tubes on the famous battleship.

    Recreation
The Captain Cook Athletic Club & Spa, located on the lower level, features an indoor pool and spa tub, massage rooms (surcharge), circuit-training room, and racquetball court. The club also has separate women’s and men’s areas—each with a workout room containing cardio machines, Nautilus equipment, and free weights; tanning beds (surcharge); lounge; locker room; sauna; and steam room. Classes such as Pilates, yoga, and water aerobics are also provided.

The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, an 11-mile paved path along Cook Inlet, draws walkers, runners, bicyclists, and even moose—the latter generally found toward trail's end. Along the way are maritime and mountain views, marshlands, tidal mudflats, and flocks of waterfowl. Pods of beluga whales are sometimes visible far offshore. When winter arrives, the trail is lighted and groomed for cross-country skiing. The closest trail access is about three blocks from the hotel, at the foot of 5th Avenue, just past Elderberry Park. Bike rentals are available downtown. Flat Top Mountain, about 11 miles from downtown, is another popular—but more strenuous—hiking trail. Views from the summit encompass the city, the Chugach Mountains, Cook Inlet, and Turnagain Arm.

Outfitters in Anchorage offer fly-in fishing adventures to the backcountry via seaplane. The Alyeska Resort, about 40 miles from downtown, has 1,000 acres of deep, pristine snow for downhill skiing and snowboarding. Other winter pastimes near the city include dog sledding, ice skating, and snowmobile tours.

The recreational activities listed below are available either on site or near the hotel; fees may apply.

    Features
What to expect: This hotel comprises three copper-colored high-rises in the center of downtown. A curved driveway leads to the main entrance, where door staff in top hats greet business and leisure travelers, political figures, international dignitaries, and well-known entertainers. Beyond the hand-carved entry, the decor is nautical—without going overboard. Teak-paneled walls display huge original paintings of Captain Cook’s adventures. Ceilings are crafted of copper. Seating areas offer plenty of sink-in-and-relax armchairs, rugged basalt walls, hammered-brass lamps, and profusions of flowers. Notable artifacts displayed in public areas include ship models, South Seas masks, and a thick 1790 book describing Cook’s voyages (in a display case near the concierge station).

Amenity highlights: The hotel’s crowning glory is the Crow’s Nest restaurant, perched on the 20th floor. This destination dining room is renowned for its astonishing views of the city, mountains, and Cook Inlet, as well as its sophisticated New American cuisine and distinctive, maritime-inspired decor.

The health club, located on the hotel’s lower level, features an indoor pool and spa tub, along with separate workout facilities for men and women.

A member of the prestigious Preferred Hotels & Resorts Worldwide group, the hotel is owned by the family of Walter Hickel, former governor of Alaska and U.S. Secretary of the Interior.

Insider tip: Exquisite scarves and caps made of qiviut, the ultra-soft underwool of the Arctic musk ox, are available at the Oomingmak Musk Ox Co-op, one block from the hotel. The cooperative is owned by Native Alaskan women from remote coastal villages who hand-knit each item. Each village has a signature pattern. These warm yet feather-light garments are expensive, but they make extraordinary gifts—and there’s no sales tax in Anchorage.

The Crow's Nest - Located on 20th floor, with superb views of city, Cook Inlet, Chugach Mountains. Decor include teak furnishings and paneling, copper ceiling with teak rafters, model of Captain Cook's HMS Resolute, lamps fashioned of Polynesian baskets. Tables set with Lenox china and solid sterling silver. Sophisticated American cuisine; menu highlights include Seared Breast of Canadian Pheasant with Black Truffles, Alaska King Crab Legs with Horseradish Beet Risotto, Crow's Nest Surf & Turf. Full bar. Recipient of AAA Four Diamond Award, as well as Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence for 10,000-bottle wine cellar. Dinner nightly except Sunday.

Whale's Tail - Casual dining with distinctive decor, including 300-year-old Tahitian war masks, stained glass, hand-pounded copper whale, velvet couches. Coffee drinks, freshly baked pastries, appetizers, light entrees, microbrews, wines by the glass. Wide selection of newspapers and magazines. Also a stop on the First Friday Art Walk, with artist appearances. Wireless Internet access (surcharge). Open daily.

Fletcher's - Pub-style room spotlighting seafood, Italian fare. Named in honor of Fletcher Christian (HMS Bounty). Caesar salad, Buffalo burger, venison stew, lasagna, pizza among menu highlights. Hand-pounded copper ceiling, beveled-glass windows. Lunch and dinner daily; full bar.

The Pantry - Light-filled room inspired by sidewalk cafes. Brick-and-copper color scheme. Salmon and halibut dishes, pot pies, chowder, salads. Desserts such as cheesecake and Apple Bread Pudding.

The Captain Cook Hotel is conveniently situated in downtown Anchorage, close to local businesses, and tourist attractions. The staff was friendly, efficient and most helpful in providing directions and local information. The rooms are well appointed and I would definitely stay there on my next visit.

We had a difficult time traveling because of flight complications. The hotel was a welcome respite at 1:00 a.m. in the morning. They have 24 hour room service and it is a good central location for Anchorage. Husband loved the decor he said that it was functional. I wanted a more attractive room. Softer colors, textures etc. Terrible coffee.
