Horizon Casino Resort Amenities
Film fans love the Horizon's self-contained eight-screen movie theater—with its own popcorn stand—that shows current releases and bargain matinees daily (fee charged). Additional adult entertainment is provided by a 24-hour, 40,000-square-foot casino with live music and dancing nightly, and a long-running female impersonator cabaret show. Horizon's professional wedding coordinators can organize nuptials, from flowers to clergy, at the hotel's pink-and-beige chapel or on a local mountaintop. The hotel also offers a large heated pool and three spa tubs. There's 13,000 square feet of meeting and reception space. Valet parking is complimentary.

Recreation
Guests can enjoy the hotel's large, freeform pool (open seasonally); a trio of adjacent spa tubs are open year-round. A small complimentary fitness center is accessible with a room key 24 hours a day.

Mountain biking, hiking, and boating are popular in the summer, and top-rated Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course is next door. During the winter, guests use the Gondola at Heavenly, located 2 blocks from the hotel. Sleigh rides depart from a meadow across the road; there's ice skating down the street; and several outfitters offer area snowmobile tours. Seasonal gear rentals are available in the vicinity.

The recreational activities listed below are available either on-site or near the hotel; fees may apply.

Features
What to expect: More subdued than some of its mega-casino hotel neighbors, the Horizon attracts leisure travelers who appreciate value and a resort on a smaller scale. The low-key lobby with its marble floors, mirrored walls, and large photos of Lake Tahoe is frequented by families headed for the large pool or video arcade, as well as celebrating couples.

Amenity highlights: The Horizon's self-contained eight-screen movie theater complex (fee charged), complete with a refreshment stand, shows current releases daily, with bargain matinees. For those pursuing real-life romance, the hotel's wedding planners can coordinate nuptials at the on-site chapel or elsewhere around the lake. Meeting and reception space measures 13,000 square feet. Recreational amenities include a large freeform pool and three spa tubs.

Insider tip: The hotel, formerly known as the Sahara, was once Elvis Presley's regular Tahoe hangout. The King's former showroom now houses the hotel's movie theater.

Josh's - This clubby restaurant with white linens, etched glass, and chandeliers serves a wide variety of regional American cuisine. Known for the nightly lobster specials, the menu also features entrées such as Hazelnut-Crusted Sea Bass, and Ribeye with Three-Peppercorn Sauce. Open nightly for dinner.

Four Seasons - Wood paneling and vintage Tahoe photos line the walls of this 24-hour coffee shop located in a quiet corner of the casino floor. Menu items include prime rib, breakfast specials, specialty sandwiches, and salads.

Le Grande Buffet - Mexican, Chinese, and other international cuisine—along with prime rib, specialty salads, and desserts—are featured at the hotel's nightly buffet. A brunch is served on weekends.

Starbucks - In a corner between the lobby and casino, this Starbucks with fireplace and table seating serves all its standard brews, plus pastries. Open daily.

Baskin Robbins - The national chain scoops its trademark flavors daily from a stand on the casino floor.

Everything seemed nice and clean. My only gripes: noisy plumbing and cold swimming pool temperature (heated just a bit). Other than that, i'd be a great place to stay.

We checked in smoothly and the front desk seemed very nice and welcoming. Although you could see that it is an older hotel without too much glitz, it is probably one of the only places in Tahoe with a beautiful clean pool. My family enjoyed the rather large pool, arcade and movie theatre. So, we did not have to go far to find things to do. Even the buffet had a variety of food to offer at dinner. Only negative thing i could think of was that the rooms are not equipped with coffee makers nor microwaves. I was traveling with someone who needed something to be heated, so that was a little inconvenient for us.

As non-gamblers, we were a little concerned about staying in a casino. We shouldn't have been! The staff were friendly and helpful everywhere from the pool to the restaurants to the reception desk to the concierge. The food was very good - and as cheap as anywhere we had eaten in California. The room was spacious and well-equipped. We even enjoyed the Casino - watching not playing! We would recommend the experience to anyone!

It is not easy to find value at Lake Tahoe in Aug., but I felt this was a good value. We parked once and did all the things we wanted to do at South Lake Tahoe.

We purchased the least expensive room available. When we checked in we were given a high floor room in the nicer tower with a balcony that overlooked the pool, the lake, the golf course, and the summer concert venue. I highly recommend spending a little more to be guaranteed this type of room. Check-in was quick and the staff friendly. The room was clean, spacious and comfortable. The pool is huge with plenty of room for sunbathers and kids to swim. Being a casino hotel, it's impossible to get away from the cigarette smell, but we expected that when we booked the room. Overall, a great stay for the price.

We arrived on Thursday and was given our room assignment. When we got to the room it was already occupied. So we went down to the desk and they assigned us another room. On Friday we left the room around 8:00 AM and left the "You can clean this room now" sign on the door. When we came back around 3:00 the room hadn't been done. I mentioned it to the Concierge around 6:00, after we had showered and changed for dinner, and she said she would call right away to Housekeeping. When we came back after dinner the room still wasn't done. So we went down to the desk and talked to the Manager. When we went back to the room around 10:00 it was finally done. Other than is problem, everything else went fine. We left on Sunday.

The hotel was very clean and our room was spacious. Concierge was very helpful in recommending local restaurants. Only complaint is that there is no coffee maker, and our heater was broken. Otherwise, thoroughly enjoyed my stay.
