Century-old charm with modern amenities in Midtown

Algonquin Amenities
The 12-floor Algonquin features twice-daily housekeeping service, turndown service, overnight shoe shine, and an attentive concierge. The front desk assists with business services such as copying, faxing, or mailing, and the well-equipped fitness center with TV sets is complimentary for guests. A multi-million-dollar refurbishment was completed in August, 2004.

Features
What to expect: Although a multi-million-dollar refurbishment was completed in August, 2004, this hotel still offers an old-fashioned ambience that draws notable stage, screen, and literary figures. Century-old marble stairs, iron banisters, and a sitting room/lobby, creating a setting that remains ideal for meeting friends over a quiet drink. Hallways have custom wallpaper featuring cartoons from The New Yorker magazine, which was born here.

Amenity highlights: Courteous attention to guests means twice-daily housekeeping service and overnight shoe shine. Copies of The New Yorker are in every guestroom. Recent updates added high-speed Internet access and a fitness center. A former carriage house is now the Oak Room, an intimate cabaret, and the Round Table Room is a civilized retreat for dinner.

Insider tip: West 44th Street resonates with history. In the 1920s, the Algonquin was home to the legendary "Round Table" that included writers Robert Benchley, George S. Kaufman, Dorothy Parker, and Alexander Wolcott. Landmark private clubs on the block include the Harvard Club, circa 1894, and the New York Yacht Club, a whimsical creation circa 1900, with the carved stone sterns of 16th-century Dutch galleons in its bay windows.

Round Table Room - In the site of the famous literary Round Table of the 1920s, this dining room serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner at antique tables with velvet-covered chairs. There's a Continental menu at dinner, and a fixed-price, pre-theater menu.

Oak Room - This restaurant offers Continental fare for dinner Tuesday through Saturday, and cabaret performances at 9 PM. A second cabaret show is offered at 11:30 PM on Friday and Saturday.

Blue Bar - This casual bar serves cocktails and pub fare for lunch and dinner.

My wife and I stayed at the Algonquin for an anniversary and had a great time. The hotel staff was extremely polite and helpful. The lobby bar is fantastic. I would definitely stay again. The location of the hotel is great for Times Square and the theatre district.

One of the two elevators was broken. There was not effort made to fix it. We were on the 11th floor. We either had to walk or wait around 10 minues. Often after the elevator came, it was too crowded to enter and we had to walk up/down anyway. The suite looked frumpy and the sink stopper didn't work. The location was great, several of the service people were very helpful.. However, I will not stay here again.

my one complaint is that for ice and soft drinks, you need to contact room service and they are not available late at night.

Excellent place to stay in Midtown Manhattan. It is only a few blocks from Times Square. The staff was friendly and the service was excellent. The room and bathroom were both small, but nice. The only negative was the noise coming through my third floor window -- but I wasn't in the room much anyway.

Service was excellent. Room service expensive, but this is New York and I would qualify this as an upscale establishment. Very comfy beds, used exercise room daily, very friendly and helpful staff...I was charged an $80 concierge fee I did not expect..???...1 1/2 blocks from Times Square. I would look at this hotel if I came to NY again.

We had the pleasure of staying at the Algonquin for four amazing nights. The rooms were comfortable, clean and quiet. The staff in general were personable, responsive to our needs and very acommodating! The lobby is a meeting room with people meeting for business, drinks, social and or for dinner. It was a great experience! I recommend this hotel to everyone!

This hotel has really comfortable beds. I took a trip to NY with my mother, and she also commented on how comfortable the beds were. The only bad thing about the hotel room was that it was really small. Otherwise, the hotel room was perfect. The beds were made every morning, and the bathrooms were very clean.
