What to expect: Las Vegas grew up around the Stardust's 62 tropical and desert acres on the north end of what became known as The Strip. Here, traditional Las Vegas still exists via a mahogany-paneled steakhouse, a softly-lit lounge offering musical acts, an elegant casino, and sundecks and pools to restore and refresh after all-night entertainment. Amenity highlights: The tropical-garden pool complex includes two pools—one free-form and the other rectangular for lap swimming. Between them rises a large sandstone structure in a coconut-palm grove. Each side of the massive rock shelters a 10-person spa that's always open for social soaking. Insider tip: In addition to assisting commercial travelers with services and cellular phone rentals, the resort's business center rents digital cameras to vacationers.

Award-winning illusionist Rick Thomas to open at Stardust March 25, 2005 A professional illusionist for more than 20 years, Thomas' unique style of performing is characterized by a graceful stage manner that reflects his early theatrical experience as a national ballroom dancing champion. Accompanied by a troupe of showgirl-dancers, the 6'4" showman employs intricate choreography to embellish his large-scale illusions that involve exotic birds and motorcycles in addition to jungle cats. His trademark illusions include shrinking a snarling 500-pound royal white Bengal tiger into a cuddly cub and levitating a showgirl high above the stage and then making her disappear. Rick Tomas holds several honors, including the prestigious "Magician of the Year" award presented by the Academy of Magical Arts. He was named "Stage Magician of the Year" on the television special "The World Magic Awards." He has appeared on two NBC "World's Greatest Magic" specials and starred in his own ABC special, "The Magic of Rick Thomas." His illusions have also been seen by TV audiences on A&E, the Discovery Channel, and the Learning Channel.
