What to expect: The huge Slavyanskaya, set in its own compound, is almost a village in itself. Guests enter through a large revolving door and see the hotel's lobby stretching into the distance through arcades of shops and lively bars and restaurants. The busy reception desk is surrounded by groups of conventioneers, while lone business travelers pace the marble floor, waiting to meet their local contacts.
Amenity highlights: The Slavyanskaya is designed for business, with most of the second floor dedicated to serving the needs of conventioneers and local businesses. Copying, faxing, Internet access, binding and travel services are all available. A basement fitness center has cardio equipment and an indoor pool with aquaerobic classes. Tens of shops line the ground floor, while upstairs the America Cinema plays movies in English.
Insider tip: Follow the footbridge opposite the hotel and you'll end up at Arbat Ulitsa, one of Moscow's most characterful streets. Once the haunt of poets and artists - including legendary 1960s political songwriter, Bulat Okudjava - the pedestrianised Arbat is now the place to listen to street musicians or pick up old Soviet memorabilia, matroishkas (Russian nesting dolls) and amber jewelry from pavement stalls.
Balanchine - This traditional restaurant serves Russian food from the time of the Tsars. As well as a buffet breakfast and daily dinner, Balanchine has a Sunday brunch/dinner which runs all afternoon and evening. Guests dine to the sound of Russian music in a room decorated in midnight and powder blues. Talavera - The hotel's popular Mediterranean restaurant serves lunch, dinner and snacks - signature dishes include Blackened Tuna with Cilantro. Decorated with cheerful frescoes in yellows and greens, Talavera hosts live Latin guitar every evening. Sumosan - Spilling out into the lobby, this Japanese restaurant looks like a traditional Japanese garden, complete with Shinto screens, bridges and ponds full of koi carp. Serving lunch and dinner, Sumosan offers a wide range of fresh-made sushi as well as teppanyaki dishes. Café Amadeus - The hotel's lobby café serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, cakes and drinks from a European/American menu. Burgers and hot sandwiches are a specialty. Guests can use the café’s gaming machines or watch the comings and goings in the lobby. Lobby Bar - Deep, blue leather armchairs and frosted glass tables under cool, dim lights make this an easy place to spend an hour or two sipping vodka martinis. Hot and cold American-style snacks are served in the evenings to groups of businessmen.
