Features
What to expect: Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Benson is an opulent, old-style hotel built in 1912 and originally opened as an annex to the Oregon Hotel next door. The landmark property features an exterior fashioned of glazed terra cotta and brick, inspired by French Empire style. Guests include both business and leisure travelers who appreciate the historic decor and attentive staff. Amenity highlights: The main lobby and fireplace are framed by walls finished in rare (now extinct) Circassian walnut imported from the forests of Imperial Russia. Notable lobby features include a coffered ceiling, Austrian crystal chandeliers, and an Italian marble staircase. Guests are encouraged to linger over complimentary morning coffee and tea and afternoon tea and cookies. Northwest jazz bands provide entertainment Wednesday through Saturday evenings. Insider tip: Complimentary evening wine tasting sessions are held by candlelight in the wine cellar, which is located behind a "secret" wall panel in the hotel's London Grill restaurant. Candlelight dinners for two to 14 people can be arranged in the wine cellar as well.
The London Grill - Located on the lower level of the hotel and open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, this 50-year-old restaurant is famous for its Northwest specialty dishes and an extensive wine list drawing from a cellar with more than 10,000 bottles. El Gaucho - This upscale, theatrical Argentinian steak and chop house has low lighting, dark wood, and an open kitchen. Open for dinner only, El Gaucho also has a cigar lounge and a bar with live music. Lobby Court Grill - The Lobby Court Grill offers buffet lunch and an evening bar with a light menu. Regional jazz bands play here Wednesday through Saturday evenings.

| Very comfortable, overall experience. The lighting in the bathrooms could be a little better. The hotel allows dogs, so don't be surprised if you hear an occasional bark! Great downtown location.

| beautiful hotel, but kind of noisy. At first I was assigned a very small room at the end of a hallway, but they changed it promptly. The daily tea and wine tasting sessions are a nice touch.

| The Benson is an old, but well maintained hotel within walking distance of downtown Portland's complimentary light rail systems. The lobby had live jazz on Friday and Saturday night, and it was very nice to enjoy a glass of wine while listening. On Saturday afternoon, we were notified in writing of a parade the next day which would impact traffic, which was very helpful. I'd recommend bringing your own shampoo and soap, and there is ample parking close by if you don't want to valet your vehicle.

| This hotel was nice and the staff was great. The only problem I had was with the bathroom. It was small and a little old so it wasn't very comfortable. There was no fan in the bathroom so if it got too steamy it was unbearable. The hotel was close to everything though, within walking distance so that made it easy to get around without having to use your car.
