Front desk help was surly and not very bright. Spa/hot tub was "out of service. Bar drinks were thin and tastless. Dining room was OK but very pricey. General condition of hotel, casino, and public rooms was run down and smelled musty.

The CalNeva is a nice hotel and is clean and comfortable in that respect. The rooms are actually really nice and over look Lake Tahoe. Its just the customer service that was an issue. Upon checking in, the room I reserved with a king bed was supposedly not guaranteed, so two double beds were given instead without much offering by the front desk to fix the situation. The next day, the maids were cleaning rooms all day long and finally got to our room at about 4pm when we were resting. I told them we wouldnt be leaving for another hour or so and apparently her shift was over by then so we never got maid service for that day. Lastly, while the hotel restraunt is actually really good, the service is very very slow. Overall, yes this is a nice hotel but I do not think I would stay there again.

We paid for Premier Lakeview Room and ended up on the 3rd floor tower overlooking the roofs of cottages and trees with a little mountain view. In order to go down to the lobby/casino floor, we had to push the UP button for elevator service, then if no one was in the elevator, quickly push the down button. Mattresses were the most uncomfortable I ever slept on in all of the hotels I have been to - including much cheaper hotels. We paid the same rate for this room as a 5 star hotel in San Francisco that had offered discounted rates.

Older hotel that needs some renovation and updates, but the rooms are nice and clean, with great views of Lake Tahoe. The casino is small and not noteworthy, and the food is average and somewhat over-priced, but the dining room does have a fantastic view of the lake as well. Pool is small but you can swim across the California/Nevada state lines.

Fair price, only stayed one night but would have liked to stay longer. Rooms are a bit outdated but clean. Service was OK- bar staff was great. Not the place to stay if you're looking for a huge casino, but there are a couple in walking distance. might return next summer

It's a beautiful location and a classic old resort, but the building is not well maintained and they are short of staff. I wouldn't recommend staying there. A couple of examples: 1) Peeling wallpaper 2) Exercise room machines mostly broken 3) No one to clean up around the pool

Neat hotel with some history; Frank Sinatra used to own it and was forced to sell it when the Nevada Gaming Commission revoked his license. This has been many years ago and that was probably the last time anyone worried about the maintenence of the hotel. Wallpaper is coming off the walls, puckered carpets, mildew smell.....not too nice. The pictures on Expedia don't look like the rooms at all.

We went to Tahoe for a weekend to do some spring skiing (April 21-23 2006), and the Cal Neva had the best rate on Expedia at the time I looked. We were a bit apprehensive about the hotel since there is gambling, and we brought our 6-year old with us. However, there was no problem at all, we booked a deluxe lake view room, and it was perfect for the three of us. It was very spacious and updated with tile in the entry and bathroom. The view was fantastic, and all in all, a real steal for the price. The hotel lobby, gaming area and other public areas were a bit dated, but lets face it, so are most of the hotels/motels in Tahoe. I went to the bar for drinks the evening we arrived and the service was very friendly and the drinks were made well. We didnt try the restaurant, but herd from others that it wasnt bad. The hotel is also relatively close to Northstar at Tahoe where we went skiing, another plus. I will definitely stay there again if the price is reasonable.

The hotel was a little run down and the staff is not very personable. The restaurant hours were not correct - we could not get food after 9pm. However, the room was beautiful, comfortable and inviting.
