Features
What to expect: Built in 1874 the Grand Hotel is a Stockholm landmark and lies at the edge of the harbor directly opposite the Royal Palace. It was the original home of the Nobel Prize dinner and to this day Nobel laureates stay at the hotel during the annual ceremony. The gold-crested green columns in the lobby and the original oil paintings decorating the walls give an immediate sense of grandeur.

Amenity highlights: Guests can enjoy traditional Swedish fare and fantastic views in the Grand Veranda, or fine French cuisine in the French Dining Room. The Grand Fitness health club offers a range of treatments, including massages, facials and wraps. The 19 meeting rooms cater for a range of functions holding up to 700 people and include the vast Venetian-style Winter Garden and the Louis XIV-inspired Hall of Mirrors.

Insider tip: Visitors should take a look in the Grandezza newsletter that is left in every room. Here can be found a copy of some of the guest book signatures of famous people to have stayed at the hotel over the years. The sample displayed changes every quarter but over the years has included Nelson Mandela, Dalai Lama, Winston Churchill, Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Clint Eastwood, Margaret Thatcher, and of course, a host of Nobel laureates.

The Grand Veranda - The Grand Veranda is situated at the front of the hotel and features large windows offering excellent views of the harbor and the Royal Palace. It serves buffet breakfast in the morning and a traditional Smorgasbord buffet every evening (except during theme weeks). There is also an à la carte menu for lunch and dinner.

Franska Matsalen - Franska Matsalen, or French Dining Room, is a 90-seat restaurant serving fine French cuisine. Open every evening from Monday to Saturday, it features an à la carte menu and five set menus and wine from a 20,000 bottle cellar. The seating area is in two sections, the upper part is wood paneled, while the lower part by the window is light with cream and brown marble columns.

Overall, our stay at the Grand was very enjoyable. The food was excellent and the room was very comfortable (featuring DUX beds!). If you can, get a room with harbor view. I suspect other rooms may look on to other buildings or the bleak interior of the hotel so might not be very pleasant. Also, as is the case with most things in Stockholm these days, it's a bit pricy but the Expedia rates help take the sting out a bit.

The Grand Hotel is one of the loveliest hotels I've ever had the pleasure to stay at. Décor was tasteful, rooms were spotless, and staff was incredibly helpful. I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Stockholm; it's definitely worth the money.
