    Features
What to expect: Dating back to 1946, the Golden Nugget was upgraded from its Wild West-saloon past beginning in 1972 when Las Vegas hotelier Steve Wynn took control. It earned luxury-class status in 1984 when Wynn shocked the establishment by removing the gaudy neon encircling the hotel. Today elegance prevails, as the hotel's white-and-brass facade gleams and guests enter a white-marble-floor lobby beneath recessed mirror ceilings and brass-and-glass chandeliers.

Amenity highlights: Surrounded by coconut palms and a spacious sundeck, a large, heated, year-round pool and an eight-person spa offers water pleasure. For-rent cabanas come with television, radio, and complimentary snacks. Entered through a courtyard featuring a vaulted skylight, pink-marble columns, gleaming brass accents, and gold mirrors, a full-service health-and-beauty spa provides rest and relaxation. Facilities include a fitness center, tanning rooms, saunas, steam rooms, Swedish showers, and 12-person spas.

Insider tip: Securing a terrace seat at the hotel's Starbucks is the best method of enjoying the Fremont Street Experience sound-and-light shows.

Stefano's - White linen and decorative arches along with singing waiters set the scene for traditional Northern Italian cuisine. Open for dinner.

Lillie Langtry's - Crisp linens and dramatic lighting featuring an East-meets-West menu of mesquite-broiled, prime-grade beef and Cantonese dishes. Open for dinner.

Zax - A global menu includes a sushi bar. Open for lunch and dinner.

Carson Street Café - Open 24 hours. Light dishes and full meals featuring Hawaiian specialties such as Kahlua pork.

The Buffet - Breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffets, with champagne brunch buffet on Sundays.

Starbucks - Coffee drinks, pastries, and sandwiches served indoors or on a terrace along Fremont Street. Open 24 hours.

Zax - International menu includes sushi/sushi bar. Open for dinner only.

Room service is available 24 hours.

Under a vault of two million light bulbs and employing a 550,000-watt sound system, a four-block pedestrians-only stretch of downtown Las Vegas called Fremont Street Experience presents periodic sound-and-light shows from dusk to midnight. Other day-and-night entertainment on the street includes live music, classic-car displays, and holiday festivals. Like nine other downtown casino hotels, the Golden Nugget opens directly onto Fremont Street, creating a lively flow of pedestrian traffic.

Lon Bronson brings his 12-member All-Star R&B, Rock & Soul Revue to the Golden Nugget’s 400-seat Theatre Ballroom. Lon Bronson’s All-Star Band will perform two shows weekly; Mondays at 10 PM and Saturdays at midnight. In addition to performing with legends such as Elton John, Gladys Knight, Gloria Estefan, and Wayne Newton, the All-Star Band has performed on national television, including a stint as the resident house band during the 1998-1999 season of “Viva Variety,” Comedy Central’s cult-hit variety show.

Acclaimed entertainer, "Downtown" Gordie Brown, brings his engaging comedy and mastery of impersonation to the Golden Nugget's Theatre Ballroom. Accompanied by his live band, Brown combines dozens of classic impressions with non-stop music and comedy. Having won the acclaim of critics and audiences alike, Brown has been called an untouchable force on the comedy circuit and has received numerous awards including "Entertainer of the Year," "Best Comedian" and "Best New Show." Performances are scheduled Friday through Tuesday at 7:30 PM; no shows on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Reserved tickets are priced at $55.

In The Lounge, bands play pop, swing, and R&B. Soft lighting, ornate canopies, and brass chandeliers harkening back to the original Golden Nugget's "gambling hall" distinguish the high-energy Casino, which offers 36,000 square feet of slots, video poker, video keno, blackjack, craps, roulette, pai gow, Caribbean poker, and race/sports betting.

The room I was given when I signed in (at almost midnight), was in total disarray. The beds were broken down and the bedding was piled in the floor. When I called the front desk to let them know, they suggested I come back down to the desk and they would locate another room for me. It was up to me to suggest that maybe they should send someone up with the key to a new room instead of hauling all my luggage back down to the lobby and then back to a new room. Overall the front desk staff and restaurant staff were friendly but did not give the impression of customer service being their main concern.

This is a very nice hotel and casino. The bed was comfortable, the shower was nice. The only issue that we had was a very foul smell near the entrance to our room. We were unable to locate the cause of the smell and the hotel failed to send someone to the room to find and resolve the problem. This is a cheaper place to stay in Vegas - away from the strip in old downtown Las Vegas.

This hotel takes pride in the small "old fashioned" touches. From the vallet staff opening doors and calling for a bell man to assist us, to the constant cleaning of the hotel staff of all of the "gold" fixtures and railings etc... The room was clean and amazingly did not smell of smoke (considering most non-smoking floors usually do!) The bar staff downstairs was very friendly and the gambling was great. I was able to play for hours on just a few 20's! Didn't win, but, had fun trying. My only complaints are 1) the air condition seemed slow going but, once we left it on constantly, by day 2 it was fine. 2) The pool is closed for renovation. My daughter had brought her swim suit and was very dissappointed. However, from the looks of the model in the lobby, the pool area is going to be awesome, with a swim-up pool to a shark tank! It's scheduled completion is Fall 2006.

The good: the room was large and the bed was really comfortable. A/C coped with the 100+ degree heat outside. The bad: checkin was horribly slow - every transaction seemed to be a "problem" somehow. Express checkout worked great. The food I had was middling quality, but it was also cheap, so hard to find fault. Something to think about: downtown Las Vegas is NOT walking distance from the Strip, so if you want to spend most of your time there, it would be better to stay there. The downtown area has some good casinos and everything's walkable, unlike the Strip where the giant hotels are so big it takes forever to get from one to the next. It looks like the hotel is putting in a theater as well as a new steakhouse so there might be more entertainment coming to that area which would be nice.

We've been going to Las Vegas for many years (staying on the strip always) and were very surprised to find the Gold Nugget such a high-quality hotel and casino. Can't wait for the renovations to be completed and will definitely go back next time.

This is my third stay in this hotel in the past 12 months. It was clean as usual but the air conditioner was so loud it was distracting. Food was excellent in the main restaurant and the breakfast buffet a great value at $7.00. This is a more classy old-school vegas hotel than on the strip and Freemont street provides a unique experience. This is the only downtown hotel I would stay at, however, I never win here. If I want a fair shake at the slots or the tables, I inevitably end up at one of the three adjacent casinos on Freemont street.

The Golden Nugget feels like "old money". Elegant, classy and not at all like the "shopping mall experience" of the Strip. The rooms are very nice, very comfortable and pricing is just right with Expedia. The only downside is the highspeed internet is rather expensive.

Big hotel, very decent. Staff try too hard to sell time shares. Light shows in evenings are great. We liked staying off the strip and being so close. Glenn

The hotel is great. Not as new or fancy as the ones on the stripe but still great. We went one week before christmas so the price was very LOW. It's not on the stripe but there is nothing bad about that. The coupons saved some money. The only complaint is that I don't like the annoying sales people in the lobby. Overall, it's a great experience and I will stay again.
