This is clearly an older hotel, but well maintained. About to undergo a $40 million renovation and it needs it, but I hope it doesn't lose its historical ambience. Very comfortable, with touches of elegance. I love the woodwork, high ceilings, rooftop bar, wonderful breakfast buffet. Concierge was very helpful. And the location cannot be beat for the tourist. Directly on the Bund and at the sightseeing tunnel to cross under the River to the Oriental pearl TV Tower. Nanjing Road shopping outside the door. I highly recommend this bargain in Shanghai.

I have stayed at this hotel a couple of times the first time the room was much bigger but even this time the room was still spacious. Service was still a little poor but the room and buffet breakfast made up for it.

Living in Dubai I have come to know the quality and standards hotels should be living up to. Having never been to Shanghai I was well impressed by the Peace Hotel, its prime location and most of all its history, ambiance and style. The beds were comfortable, the Superior Room with two double beds were spacious, only the shower was a little dissapointing and our view was not impressive. But Shanghai lives by night as well, so the view was not important and there was hot water and a powershower in the Spa. Highly recommended!

When I lived in Shanghai in the early 80s I used to seek out the Peace Hotel as a quiet refuge. The view of the Huangpu was sweeping and there was still plenty of the faded elegance oddly preserved from pre-Communist days. Since then the Peace has evolved, not entirely as Hardoon would have envisioned it, into a sort of Chinese interpretation Western elegance. This is neither wrong nor bad, but if you are expecting a restoration on par with pre-Communist days you won't find it here.
