| Andros, the greenest island of the Cyclades, has always been a favourite summer retreat amongst the Athenians. And yet it has managed to remain largely unspoiled by mass tourism. On the craggy hillsides, the intense greens of the holm oaks and Aleppo pines contrast with the dazzling white houses clustered around the sheltered bays. The private balconies of the Paradise Hotel all have sea or mountain views and look out onto some of the most magnificent scenery in Greece. Unlike some of the more arid islands, mineral springs provide an abundant water supply - the famous Sariza and Lezina labels are even exported to the mainland. The high ceilings of the airy bedrooms reflect a traditional style of architecture rarely seen today. Local Greek needlework curtains frame the large patio windows and the four-poster beds. After a day of watery fun on the beach or beside the swimming pool you can relax with a glass of oúzo accompanied by tempting meze in the comfortable lounge looking out across the valley towards the sea. Poseidon’s bounty, fresh fish from the depths of the Aegean, figures large on the menu of local specialities and international dishes served on the restaurant terrace under the stars.
