The West End Studios and Hostel was fun. It was my first time staying in a hostel and it was a great experience. The hostel is about 2 blocks from the subway which was very convenient. The front desk was extremely helpful with questions and directions. The restrooms were maintained. Its old but not bad.

Considering that we did not pay an extravagent amount for this hotel, I really was not expecting much. My fellow travels and I really just wanted a place to lay our heads at night. We got that. Bathrooms were shared between several rooms but always very clean. This is a perfect place for students and young adults -- people who are on a budget and don't require much from their place of lodging. The hotel is in a safe part of NYC on the Upper West Side. West End Ave. parallels Broadway. We frequented a great lounge just a few blocks north called the Underground. There are also some yummy restaurants (juice shops, pizzerias, Starbucks) nearby. I would stay there again. Like I said, if you go there not expecting much, you won't be disappointed.

So true, you get what you pay for. If you go in with low expectations, they will be met. In our case, we knew we were arriving in Manhattan late at night (9 p.m.) and leaving early the next day. We were greeted nicely. The building is somewhat old. The room was delapidated, but at least the sheets and towels were clean. The bathroom down the hall was, ahem, in barely passable physical condition, though it was not unclean. (Whether it could ever be could "clean" is debatable.) Unfortunately, on our Saturday night, there were some loud guests upstairs. The place might be terribly uncomfortable on a warm night (ours was in early June and cool and thus tolerable). Our family (yes I braved it and took my pre-teen children and we all slept in one room) was delighted to leave the next morning at 7 a.m. Location is decent and there are some nice "local" restaurants in the area. Bottom line: There is a reason it costs what it does.

The hotel met our basic needs; hot water, clean room, safe neighborhood, and close to destinations and subway/bus stops. However, the aesthetics were awful. If they repaired the walls, repainted them, and replaced the matted, dirty carpet with tile - the place would be great! The building is really old and not well maintained. The shared bathrooms were clean and we never had to wait to use one but the tubs were old (bring your shower shoes). The basic cable extends from wires on the roof outside. The A/C window units work but they are old and dirty and missing knobs. Only some of the rooms have sinks and A/C but they all have mini fridges. Our first room didn't have A/C (it had a room fan) but when told that my husband has severe allergies and we booked an air conditioned room, the girl on duty found another room and transferred us. Again you get what you pay for, we had a great trip because we didn't go to NYC to sit in our hotel room. We basically used it for sleeping and showering. There are lots of great neighborhood resturants and it is only a block away from the subway station and several bus stops. It is also walking distance from Central Park West.

I stayed in this hotel for a week in mid-June. The rooms are very rough and ready, but mine was clean, secure and a good size. The location is excellent and I felt very safe at all hours of the day and night. The hotel provides wireless internet for $10 for 24 hours, though the signal was a little weak in my room. The hotel also has free access to laundry facilities from 5PM onwards. On the down-side, the rooms are not the prettiest and you shouldn't expect the air-con in your room to work...

For those of you who don't want to experience a very old hostel, 2 inch gaps at the top of your door so people could peak in, no screens on your window, no A/C on hot summer days (scorching in June), don't stay here. If you don't like a very low-quality hostel, tiny rooms (about 10 x 10 feet, our friends was smaller) closet bathrooms (shared), tiny shower, hairs in the sheets of your bed from previous tenants (won't mention what the bed spread smelled like), locks held on by dry-wall screws, then this place is definetely not for you. It was a dump! We saw rats in the alley and cockroaches in the rooms! I would never stay here again! I wore sandles in the shower and in our own room because I was afraid of contracting some kind of fungus! This is not a place I would take my family to either.

The hotel was in a nice neighborhood with lots of stores and restaurants around. Close to the subway. Rooms were clean and simple. Bathrooms were clean and nicer than expected, although shower temperature left something to be desired. Elevator takes a few minutes to start once you get in, so plan on using the stairs. Overall a good value for the price.

    1. It is cheap to stay there. But with the bargin price, you can expect very little. 2. During my stay, the elevator happened to be out of order. And my room was on the top floor. (And I had to carry my luggage without the aid of the elevator) 3. I stayed in summer. And there is no air-condition in the room. No fan either. The room stayed very warm until after midnight. 4. Location very good. Nice neighborhood, close to subway station (Line 1), close to Central Park. 5. Staff nice, but they could not fix the elevator. 6. Shared bathroom looked OK. 7. 2 computers in the lobby, accessible to the Internet. You have to pay to use them, but they function much better than imagined. 8. No decor in the room at all. (those paintings do not work) Very bare.
