Art'otel Berlin Mitte Amenities
Constructed back-to-back with Ermelerhaus, a former residence dating from 1643, the hotel opened in 1997. Ermelerhaus contains the hotel's restaurant in a skylighted inner courtyard. A few professional offices are located on the top (third) floor of the house, with banquet/wedding salons located on the second floor. When functions are not in progress, hotel guests may ascend a gilded spiral staircase to view the salons, which feature crystal chandeliers and original painted ceilings with elaborate gilt trim. The hotel itself includes a black-floored lobby with acrylic columns, yellow- and red-leather chairs, a wood-burning fireplace (lighted during the holiday season) in a red wall, and an oval, light-colored wood reception desk--a suitably contemporary, gallery-like setting for displaying 300 colorful works by Georg Baselitz, a noted contemporary German artist. The lobby includes a computer with wireless Internet access, with wireless access available throughout the hotel (surcharges). The hotel's staff speaks fluent English.

Features
What to expect: The hotel attracts travelers with a taste for art, architecture, and history--as well as for contemporary German cuisine—who seek an alternative to large hotels located in commercial neighborhoods.
Amenity highlights: Guests can tour gilt-ceilinged salons in the adjacent 17th-century residence Ermelerhaus and enjoy breakfast (buffet), lunch, and dinner in the contemporary-fare, fine-dining restaurant in Ermelerhaus’ skylighted inner courtyard. Strolling the riverbank in front of the residence provides an appreciation of Berlin's changing seasons.
Insider tip: Ermelerhaus was built for a pioneering German social activist and later converted to a library/art gallery. When the East German regime proposed razing the house to make way for commercial development, preservationists arranged for it to be moved 183 meters (200 yards) to its present site in a row of elegant 18th-century houses facing a channel of the Spree River.
Factory Restaurant & Bar - Whimsically named fine-dining restaurant/bar located in skylighted inner courtyard and flanking salons of 17th-century Ermelerhaus. Light-colored wood floor, contemporary red-and-blue upholstered chairs, white table linens, yellow-leather bar stools. Buffet breakfast daily. Lunch/dinner menu includes pickled goose with red cabbage salad and ravioli, beef consommé with oxtail crêpe, roasted halibut with red rice and roasted plums, and warm chocolate ravioli with frozen hazelnut parfait and candied kumquats. Seasonal specials, including autumn/winter game dishes.

| If you're looking for an unusual, artsy place to lay your head, try Arte'otel in Berlin. It's located on a non-descript looking street, but once inside, the interior will make your eyes pop out. The hotel is opposite the underground system so it is a good place from which to fan out to see the city. If you're interested in old world charm, this is NOT the hotel for you.

In quiet, rebuilt area, former E. Zone, on a bracnh of the Spree. Outdoor drink and dining in warm weather. Second viist, thoroughly satisfactory.
