Features
What to expect: Catering to an international clientele (possibility of topless sunbathing), the resort comprises three side-by-side hotels—, Riu Mambo, and Riu Bachata—sharing an 800m (about one-half mile) beach along the Atlantic Ocean. Connected by a paved walkway, the hotels resemble low-rise pastel-colored villages. Riu Merengue guests enjoy access to all resort facilities, entertainment, and activities. Each hotel has its own pools, children's club, open-air theater for nightly entertainment, activities schedule, and choice of restaurants, including theme-dinner buffets. Guests may drink at all hotels' bars and eat breakfast, lunch, and snacks at all restaurants. Guests must eat dinner at their own hotel’s restaurants. Riu Merengue Hotel was the first in the resort and is located in the middle. Like Riu Bachata, it includes a large, open-air, plaza-like bar, an amenity Riu Mambo does not have. Riu Bachata Hotel is the newest and largest. It adjoins the resort's water-sports beach on Maimón Bay. The casino is next to the lobby. Featuring a swimup bar and jetted section, its pool complex is the largest and most elaborate. This hotel includes ice machines, which the other hotels do not. Riu Mambo Hotel is the smallest of the three. Bars offer only domestic-brand liquors, although guests may enjoy international brands at the other hotels' bars. While all three hotels welcome children, Riu Mambo Hotel is especially family-friendly because it includes a supervised children's section in the main buffet restaurant at dinner.
Amenity highlights: This hotel includes a freeform pool and a children's pool. Guests also enjoy access to pools at the resort's other hotels, including one at Riu Bachata Hotel with a jetted section and swimup bar. Padded lounge chairs and thatched-roof sunshades flank pools. At the resort’s western end, Maimón Bay Beach features a water-sports center providing kayaks, snorkeling gear, sailboats, pedal boats, windsurfers, and boogie boards.
Insider tip: This area of the Dominican Republic is known as the Amber Coast for its rich deposits of the semi-precious stone. The Amber Museum in Puerto Plata 10 km (6.25 mi) east of the hotel is an excellent place to shop for amber.

| My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Merengue during the last two weeks in June. The hotel was a pleasure to stay in. . We stayed in an upstairs room where the huge bed was comfortable and firm. The large balcony made for an enjoyable cocktail atmosphere before dinner with the view magnificent overlooking a myriad of beautiful palms. The food was very good with a wide assortment for every meal. You name it, they had it. What we enjoyed most were the wonderful lounge chairs. They were incredibly comfortable, an asset to those of us who love to get under some palms, look at the ocean, and read. We enjoyed this aspect the most along with the absolutely delightful staff. We only have two rather minor qualms. The first was the use of very load speaker systems starting around ten in the morning to get people involved in the different activities. It would be nice if the speaker volume could be turned down a little The second qualm is that although the drinks are unlimited, the rum, wine, and other liquors were of low quality. But hey, you could drink as much as you wanted

| This is not a 4* resort in any sense. It was mediocre. I was expecting 4* and got more like 3*. There wasn't much of a selection as far as food. Not to mention it wasn't that tasty. There is a restaurant where you need to make reservations, which I had to stand in line for about 20 minutes to get. And after all the hoopla the food was terrible. The hotel room never did get quite cold enough. As a result of the humidity all of my clothes in my suitcase smelled of mildew. Don't drink the water. The drinks were never very cold. No umbrellas in the drinks. Just a dissappointment all around. Won't be going back.

| The hotel is very nice and clean. Only thing is that the beach is rocky, you need Aqua socks to get in the water without hurting your feet. The food was generally good. The shuttle service was not a complementry service from the hotel.

| The Riu Merengue was a nice all inclusive. The food was good considering- don't expect some high class meal, it is buffet style with a lot of options from seafood, beef, pork and chicken. It is nice to lay next to the pool but you have to wake up early to get a chair (they rarely become available throughout the day), bring spf 30 sunscreen. The beach is private, we didn't go in the water but it looked fairly clean. There are activities throughout the day and a show at night, also the "disco" is open for dancing. The crowd is a mix of families, singles and couples as well and European, Canadian, and Americans- an interesting group. Overall it is a nice place, I won't go back only because I like new experiences. I will stay in another "Riu" hotel though.
