Features
What to expect: Tuscan columns, a Giotto-style wishing fountain, and a large fresco of 16th-century Florence set the tone for this seven-story, 183-room boutique hotel. The hotel is popular with theatergoers and shoppers, who love its location next to Union Square, the cable cars, and the theater district. At the lobby wine bar, international tourists hobnob with weekenders from around the Bay Area, before settling in front of the fireplace.

Amenity highlights: A hosted wine reception is offered every evening at the in-house wine bar, amidst colorful majolica vases, fresh flowers, still-life paintings, and a marble fireplace. Here, or at the acclaimed adjacent Italian restaurant, guests can sample 40 wines by the glass. Morning begins with coffee and homemade pastries, available for purchase from Caffe Kuleto's, a sidewalk café in the hotel lobby.

Insider tip: At the foot of Powell Street, 1 block from the hotel, is the terminus for the cable car, where most visitors queue to catch a ride. Riders can avoid the long line by simply standing under the cable car sign at any point along the route and waiting for the conductor to stop and let passengers board.

Kuleto's - This top-notch contemporary Italian restaurant focuses on regionally farmed produce, fresh meats, and seasonal fish. Accented in dark wood and white marble, and anchored by a 40-foot-long antipasti bar, Kuleto's attracts a lively, local pre- and post-theater crowd as well as tourists from around the globe. It is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Caffe Kuleto's - The sidewalk café adjacent to the hotel lobby serves pastries, pizzas, and panini, as well as fresh-squeezed juices and coffee. Signature vinegars, oils, and sauces are available for purchase.

Due to our flight delays we called the Villa Florence from our Dallas layover to inform them we would be two hours late arriving and please hold our reservations. Upon arriving we were informed there were no standard double double rooms left. The only room had a queen bed with a sofa bed. Four adults and seven hours travel time this was very uncomfortable. To their credit upon Our request they did find our standard double double the second night that we had previously booked.

This was my second stay at the hotel. It is in the heart of the city just south of Union Square near good restuarants and great shopping. It is also close to different modes of transportation and garage parking. The hotel is safe and clean as well as a calming refuge from the busy streets outside. Be sure to ask for an inerior room. Rooms facing the street can be very noisy at night and in the early morning hours. Interior rooms are quiet.

I was in San Francisco over Labor Day weekend and stayed at the Villa Florence for 2 nights. It was such a wonderful surprise! The lobby decor is beautiful- a mural of Florence greets you as you walk through the door, the decor is very Italiano! They offer complimentary coffee in the morning and wine service in the afternoon. The room we stayed in was small but comfortable and decorated in the same chic European style as the hotel- you must try the leopard print bath robe in the closet! The hotel is situated on Powell, right in the heart of Union Square- you can't get closer to the action. Request a room at the back of the hotel as it's away from the cable car line and quieter. But finally... the thing that stands out most for me is the service. The gentleman at front desk was very helpful, as was the concierge who even printed our boarding passes upon leaving. Everyone was helpful and kind, and it really did seem like their mission was to make our stay as enjoyable as possible.

Having read a few negative reviews (from 2005) on this hotel I was amazed at how perfect it was for me, my husband, and his sister. We were given a quiet and spacious room at the back of the building. Decor and ameneties were appealing. I was impressed that the soap/shampoo/lotion were from Aveda. Every employee we met was gracious and accomodating. Maids even greeted us as we passed in the hall. The location was perfect for us - just three blocks up from BART and a block away from Union Square. Kuleto's restraunt was packed on Saturday night. It has an excellent reputation. My advice - as early in the day as you can. I think that's how we go such good room.

I was looking for a hotel with decent beds and a good location. The beds were great and the location perfect. This is an older hotel, but maintained beautifully. The staff was young, but very nice and helpful. Remember, this is downtown San Francisco, so everything is small; the room, the bathroom, the shower, the elevator, the corridors, etc. That is not negative, just reality in the city.

My wife and I stayed at the Vila Florence for 5 nights recently for our Tenth Anniversary trip. The hotel has a very good location in downtown San Francisco and gives you easy access to the BART, cable cars, and MUNI. The lobby is beautiful and the staff were friendly when we checked in. The rooms are small, and the hotel is definitely showing its age. The bathroom was where this was most evident. There was wallpaper peeling from the tops of the wall, and what appeared to be mold growing near the ceiling in the bathroom. It just felt dirty to me. The provided robes looked extremely dirty and old--I refused to touch them. We had a bad experience when our elevator door was jammed and wouldn't open. We were stuck inside with another couple. We tried using the door open button and our floor button, but nothing worked. We finally hit the alarm bell to get help, but no one came to our aid. We were in the elevator for about five minutes total. We finally forced the door open. We went around the corner to the front desk to let them know what happen. The three employees standing there had no idea that we had been pressing the alarm bell. I called the front desk after we returned to our room to speak to a manager about this, but was told to call back in the morning. I did, and was once again told that he was not available. This was not resolved during my stay at the hotel.
