Features
What to expect: With just 85 rooms, the NH Doelen has the feel of a private mansion. A domed clock crowns the impressive redbrick and stone building, originally part of the city’s 16th-century ramparts. The six-story atrium lobby, ringed by galleries, features delicate molding, gold-leaf decoration, a grandfather clock, and grey marble floors. Over the years, the hotel has hosted such illustrious guests as Elisabeth (Sissy), the 19th-century Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary. It is also at this site where Rembrandt purportedly painted his famous Nightwatch. The Doelen’s quiet location on a side street in the center of town makes it a popular choice for vacationers and business travelers. Amenity highlights: The hotel’s sunny breakfast room, with large windows overlooking the Amstel River, serves a daily buffet breakfast. Insider tip: Two blocks from the hotel is the Old University at Oude Manhuispoort, with a covered passageway where visitors can browse the outdoor booksellers.
A buffet breakfast is served each morning in the sunny dining room overlooking the water (surcharge). The hotel does not have its own restaurant, but numerous dining options are within the surrounding area. Nearby restaurants: Café de Jaren Restaurant Vermeer Indra Pudra

| room was very disappointing - smudges and tears on wallpaper; thin, old towels, furniture faded;lounge smokey with uncomfortable furniture, not a place you would sit in; even staff admitted it was dumpy. when i called to ask for different rm, they offered transfer to another hotel in their chain, but none had canal views.they did give us complimentary breakfast. Hotel is in very good location, and we had nice canal view with large open windows, it just is not the standard for boutique hotel we have found in other places. if you are looking for upscale charm, go elsewhere.

| Very good location, easy to access by walking, nice cafe nearby, basic room and medium quality service, convenient as long as you are ready to spend most of the time out of the room

| This is what you expect from a hotel, whether you are getting a deal through expedia or not. Beautiful on the inside and out. Excellent location, close to everything. Dining room is charming overlooking a canal, though you can eat cheaper elsewhere, sometimes you don't want to bother searching for somewhere to eat, so it's worth it for the convenience. Staff are friendly, helpful and courteous, even looking up things for us on their computer to help us find something. Couldn't recommend this hotel more.

| Recently made my second trip to the Dam and could not have been happier. I chose the Doelen after seeing it from across the canal back in 04. Not only is it beautiful but its service is outstanding. The staff was friendly, proffessional and responsive to my every need from the moment I arrived till the airport shuttle (that they arranged for me) pick up. The room was clean and surprissingly very quiet (even as the housekeeping staff went about there work), fine room amenities, and the bed is extremely comfortable. As others have reported the location is in a lovely area in the city with many resturants and entertainment options. One thing I must report is how addicting the hotel's coffee shop is. Waking up each day and enjoying a great tasting capuccino while looking out onto the canal is one of my fondest memories.

| This was the second time we stayed at the Doelon. We love the central location, it makes the walking around town a breeze. The rooms are very comfortable (very soft beds)and the hotel itself is beautiful. we would recommend this hotel and we will stay there again ourselves.

| This hotel is in a convinient location, and that's about it. I got a smoking room when I requested for non-smoking. I requested for a room change, but the lady at the front desk never got back to me. I was put in a probably the worst room in the hotel. It was noisy, small, and not even at alarm clock. Also, only one elevator and it is extremely slow. Luckily I was on the first floor, so I was able to use the stair. If you want a comfortable stay, I do not recommend this hotel.

| The hotel was perfectly located - within walking or a short tram ride to everything we wanted to visit. Room was small by supersized American standards, but charming - overlooked the canal - great view. Very clean. Friendly staff, nice (although pricey) breakfast available. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

| This was a lovely hotel and was centrally located in the city. We stayed at many hotels and this by far was one of the best. Not only was it tastefully decorated but was very comfortable. The staff was also one of the best that we have experienced. We would definitely stay at the Doelen on our next trip.

| The hotel exterior and lobby were spectacular and the location could not have been more convenient to the sites in Amsterdam. By US standards though, the room was VERY tiny - less than 12 by 12. However, it was very well appointed and had all the necessary ammenities. The bathroom and decor could have used some updating but the view made it all worth it. If you go in the summer, I only saw a fan in the room, no A/C.
