| The Hotel is located directly on the lake and the views from your room are awesome - across the lake and to the snow dusted mountains beyond. It is also very conveniently located for the bars shops and nightlife of Queenstown , which is a very pleasant 5 minute stroll along the lakeside. The service is generally friendly and the staff young and helpful. The food and service in the bars and restaurant are good for a hotel , which are usually disapointing compared to restaurants , and you are within 5 minutes walk of several superlative restaurants -- try the bluff oysters at WAI on the waterfront. Having said all the above , the hotel is not very special from the point of view of ambiance or character and you should be aware that there are two distinct parts to the hotel. The front part-- floors 1-6 , is newer and better appointed than the rear floors 7-12 , the site being on a hillside. The rooms to the rear are a little tired and old fashioned , but they are higher and the views are unbelievable . They are comfortable enough and it is hard to say whether the front or rear parts of the hotel are a better experience. Finally , it may be the exchange rate for the New Zealand dollar , but I would say that for the price paid you get good value for your money.

| The Rydges is listed as a luxury hotel, but the one in Queenstown is a little past its prime. The location is perfect, close to town, with gorgeous views. But the hotel needs some upkeep - the bathroom had mildew around the bathtub, the caulking was loose, the faucets dripped, etc. The walls are very thin and you can hear every noise from the hallways and other rooms. The service was fine, and the rooms were just OK, a little small, but have balconies with great views.

| The hotel offered a 15% discount coupon to try their restaurant. The steak was as tough as shoe leather, and the service was dispicable. Never once did the waitress come back to our table once the food was delivered. When she picked up our dishes we told her how we felt and the only reaction and response was a smirk on her face. The only people getting service were those people who were in a tour group. We complained to the front desk but that was a waste of our time also.

| This hotel was a very good value and at an excellent location in Queenstown with an excellent view of the Milford Sound. Our only complaint was the amount of construction taking place right outside our balcony and the noise that went with it.
