| This hotel is rated 1 1/2 stars. I have stayed in 4 star hotels that were not as clean as this hotel. It is an older builder in minor ill repair. For example, the carpet needs some replacements in the hallsways, repairs where the doors meet, but the hotel smells fresh without air fresheners. The bed linens were fresh (from the mattress cover to the duvet). The corners of the room were clean (no dust collection from the vaccum missing the corners). The service was impeccable. Staff very friendly, courteous, and hospitable. I will continue to stay at this Howard Johnson Express each visit to Springfield unless circumstances change. Very, very satisfied. No internal access to room, but felt safe. My trip was for a family member's funeral and I needed peace of mind where I stayed. I had it.

| In my life I have been stranded overnight in two airports and three bus stations. I once slept in a cow pasture. With cows present. Never have I slept in anything so disgusting as this room. Reeked of metabolized alcohol and cigarettes. Everything broken and stained. Hair in tub. Bugs in shower. Graffitti covered walls. Horrible beyond anything I might describe!
