| Our hotel, the Tash Konak, was a lucky choice. We had picked it from an Expedia site because of the inexpensive rates and the apparent good location. Right on in both respects, I do not think we could have done better. Actually, I expect it to soon be more expensive, as the Tash Konak is clearly worth more stars than two, and it will not be under appreciated for long. An old traditional building, the entry is well marked. The lobby is large and welcoming, furnished with Turkish antiques, and a desk with computer services is at one end. We checked in without incident. They had received our Expedia reservation request and were ready for us. Off we went to our room. It was very small but extremely clean and well lit. The bathroom was newly tiled, with lots of towels. The TV received 32 channels, one of them in English. We explored a bit. The hotel had taken over several houses, and the resulting corridors and stairways wound around, emerging in unexpected places. After five days I am sure we had not seen all of the place. Truly in a great spot, the Tash Konak is right beside the Blue Mosque, the Arasta Bazaar, the Hippodrome, and the Hagia Sophia. The breakfast room on the roof has the most gorgeous view. The Bosphorus Sea full of ships, speedy ferries, bright blue , white clouds, seagulls soaring, a wonderful sight. We ate a familiar breakfast, after Egypt, the usual olives, cheeses, rolls, and yogurt.

| Plus: great breakfast with view of bosphorous every morning, and conveniently located to using transport and walking to touristic sites Minuses: bed was horrible!, rooms are extemely small (although we had a small terrace), and be careful that they try to "nickel and dime" on the checkout- they charged me 1.50 lira for a coke at checkout which I never drank (and the price in the room was listed as 0.75 libra!). i couldn't argue because it was so early in the morning and i was worried about losing my ride to the airport. like everything in istanbul, be careful with prices and always bargain!
