    Royal Plantation Amenities
Located in a secluded courtyard, three air-conditioned buildings with weathered-wood-shingle roofs house a health spa, a beauty salon, and a fitness center furnished with free weights and cardio and weight-training machines. The health spa includes complimentary men's and women's saunas and steam rooms and, for fees, offers hydrotherapy, body treatments, facials, and massage. Drinks, including champagne, and tea, are served during treatments. Hydrotherapy options include Moor Mud Bath, Seaweed Bath, and underwater massage. Body treatment choices include Seaweed Body Peel, Desert Heat Body Wrap, and Water Lily After Sun Soothing Wrap. Facials include seaweed, oxygenating, and aromatherapy. Massages include couples, sports, and a sampler of three techniques.

Entertainment includes jazz sessions, reggae dancing, a Jamaican folkloric show, a steel band, fire dances, and a weekly beach party. A pianist plays on the terrace during afternoon tea, and a calypso band performs on the beach each afternoon. Available for fees at the resort's tour desk are excursions to attractions such as reggae icon Bob Marley's birthplace, the Coyaba River Garden, and the Martha Brae for river rafting.

Check-in for Air Jamaica flights is available at the resort.

    Recreation
Complimentary activities include use of two lighted tennis courts; paddle boats, Hobie Waves, Aqua Trikes, windsurfers, kayaks, sailboats, and snorkeling gear; and scuba-diving trips and beginner lessons. Guests also receive a special golf deal: greens fee of $70 per person per 18 holes, transportation provided. Not included, but available, are PADI-certification (Professional Association of Diving Instructors), and open-dive courses. Other recreational activities listed below are available at or near the resort; fees may apply.

    Features
What to expect: The Royal Plantation only accepts guests 18 and older, as singles, couples, and groups. The hotel replicates the British colonial grandeur that once dominated Jamaica, with 21st century conveniences. The grand ambience begins at a formal fountain garden outside the entrance and continues through an orchid-festooned lobby featuring a green-and-white-checkered marble floor. Varied meals--all served à la carte--and warmly hospitable, non-intrusive service, make for exceptional dining.

Amenity highlights: The resort's ocean frontage includes twin beaches separated by a dock and furnished with lounge chairs and umbrellas. One beach includes a café/bar, and sunbathers there need only stick a flag in the sand to summon food-and-drink service. Shaded by almond trees, the other beach features water sports. Located on a terrace outside the lobby, a good-size pool, sundeck, and two-level spa spacious enough for 24 soakers provide panoramic Caribbean views. Fronting the spa is a wood sundeck looking down on the beach some 40 feet below. As part of the plan, guests are transported to Jamaica's signature Dunn's River Falls for a tour.

Guests who book under the Royal Plan also have full, complimentary access to the facilities and entertainment of Sandals and Beaches properties within the Ocho Rios area (includes meals). The Royal Plantation concierge can make dining, etc. arrangements for guests upon request, and, upon confirmation of plans, guests will be given an access card for the specific Sandals/Beaches hotel of their choosing. Guests will only be responsible for the cost of the private (and short) taxi ride to the hotel of their choice.

Le Papillion - Intimate, formal, air-conditioned dining room with silk wall panels, crystal-and-glass chandeliers, marble bar, white-glove service. Also, terrace seating with panoramic ocean views. Seven-course French dinner. Main course choices include pan-fried beef tenderloin, chicken ragout, venison noisettes, and pan-fried scallops. (Vegetarian menu also.) Reservations required. Formal dress code: jackets for men.

Drawing Room - Formal setting with scarlet carpet, overstuffed seating, crystal chandelier, gilt-frame mirrors and flower and bird prints. Balcony overlooking formal fountain garden outside the entrance. Piano music. Cocktails, cognacs. (Cigars available for additional charges.)

The Bayside Restaurant - Grand Georgian-style air-conditioned dining room with gilded ceiling, gilt-frame mirrors, royal-purple walls and linens, Queen Anne mahogany furniture, floral carpet, drapes framing French doors. Also, covered terrace seating with panoramic sea views. Early-morning Continental breakfast, full à la carte breakfast, à la carte lunch, à la carte dinner. Dinner choices such as poached salmon with mousseline sauce, grilled sirloin steak, ostrich steak, and coconut-crusted chicken. (Vegetarian menu, also.) Casual-elegant dress code: long pants, collared shirt, closed-toe shoes (no athletic shoes) for men, resortwear for women.

Royal Café on the Beach - Wood building with wood shingles. Linen-draped umbrella tables on wood deck. Accessible by stairway winding down through lush tropical hillside plantings. Four-course, à la carte lunch menu including lobster BLT, deep-fried frog legs, smoked-salmon croissant, smoked-oyster bruschetta, Shrimp Run Down (simmered in coconut milk), conch fritters, jerk chicken and ribs, burgers, sandwiches, salads. Ice-cream menu. Tropical drinks. Dress code: Beachwear.

    Appleton Lounge - Lobby lounge.

The hotel was clean and nicely furnished, the staff was very attentive and friendly, the beach was quietly secluded, and the peacocks were entertaining. The hotel dining options were a bit overpriced for those on the European Plan, but if you don't mind venturing to local places you can make it work nicely. We are already making plans for next year!

This resort is very nice in terms of the upkeep of the resort, room cleanliness, privacy and attentiveness of the staff for all of you're needs, they wait on you hand and foot, definitely 5-star service. However, opt for the Royal Plan all-Inclusive, because the food is very overpriced, so you don't really benefit with the European Plan, which is not all-inclusive.

The resort is beautiful, and the staff is excellent. We enjoyed the smaller feel of the hotel. Live music to dance to every night under the stars. The food, while good, isn't quite up to the quality of the rest of the hotel. Make sure to get out and eat at the jerk stand in town. We opted for the European Plan rather than the all-inclusive. It was a wash in the end.
