Older hotel with definite signs of wear and tear. Room was decent and located in the heart of the shopping district a block from the John Hancock building. Elevators were very slow and very small. Appears to be undergoing a major (long overdue) renovation.

While the location is convenient if you're looking in the area, that's about all this place has going for it. We had a terrible experience. We were given a DIRTY room - completely unmade with dirty towels on the floor. The replacement room was even worse - the tv was on and there were beer cans everywhere. The third time around, they sent security up with us to check on the room. This room, while made, was not particularly clean - little hairs in the bathtub, stained sheets, no washcloths, broken blinds, and so on - but it had been made and we took it. Not a charming place at all. The next morning before we left, the lone elevator was out of service. We were on the 15th floor. We took the service elevator down, hidden in a utility room, only because I had happened to go downstairs earlier using the stairwell. Service wasn't much to speak of either, but it's the least of my complaints. A ridiculous experience. Spend a few extra dollars elsewhere, it's worth it.

Though The Raphael is in an outstanding location, the hotel has not been well kept. The lobby looked quite nice, and the service was decent, but our arrival in the room was very disappointing. The carpet was stained, the ceiling was peeling, the bed spread had cigarette burns, and the bathroom was similarly unpleasant. The furniture had not been updated in at least 3 decades, and showed it's age. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience.

This was the cheapest hotel my partner and I could find on a recent trip to Chicago. It's in a superb location - a block from Michigan Ave. - and our room was quiet. However, the bed was really uncomfortable - it must have been ancient, because we could feel every spring popping into our backs. Also, the enamel on the tub was peeling, and one of the hand towels seemed a little dirty. Overall, it was fine for a one-night stay, but next time I'll gladly pay $50 more for a comfortable mattress.

Hotel appeared nice at check in. Staff was average. Upon entering the room, I almost fell over. The carpet was stained, there were stains on the ceiling and who knows what that was. The towels were dirty and smelled. There was no dresser. The soap and lotion that they had in the room were used and dirty. Elevators were slow. I was glad that I only had to sleep there for 5 hours! One positive note: the valet was very friendly!

Some of the "lowlights" (versus highlights): * Carpet had holes * Paint on ceiling was chipped * Wallpaper - I could put my hand between it and the wall * No ice machine * Window blinds were over half broken off, window had no screen. * The only food service was toast in the lobby for $6.25
