In general/value: I was fairly worried after reading some of the negative reviews about the Grand Papagayo. I was thinking about taking my default choice in any destination - the Four Seasons. However, I am very happy to have chosen this option instead. As a traveller who has experienced the very utmost of luxury in over 40 different countries, I can say I'm more than just a bit spoiled and expecting the very top of the spectrum. I must say I was not disappointed in the least bit. In fact, I will also venture to say this hotel represents the best value of any place I have ever stayed at, worldwide. I would expect to have paid 2 to 3 times higher in Hawaii or anywhere else for the same accomodations, not even considering the food and service. Some previous travellers were calling this a 4-star hotel. It is definitely a 5-star resort. High speed internet in every room. Deficiencies: The hot water doesn't get that hot. I think it might just have been our unit. The situation seemed to have fixed itself the second day. The unit floors were a nice terra cotta tile, but some 5-star travellers may be expecting hardwoods or slate/marble/etc. The buffet was OK but not spectacular. There are a lot of stairs (as previously mentioned), especially if you're in one of the higher-up oceanfront villas... however, there is a shuttle. Elevation changes are part of what make this resort have phenomenal vistas. 2 prong outlets in the room only.

My wife and I went to the Grand Papagayo for our honeymoon. We were pleasantly surprised with both the hotel and the staff. Everyone was extremely friendly and devoted. They were there to offer help even before we know we needed it. The resort was one of the smaller, if not smallest one in the area, which made it so much more personable. We got to know many of the staff by name, and they got to know us, offering us our favorite drinks, extra towels, and even helping us with our Spanish... Overall a wonderful hotel and a great experience!

This was a great place to stay!! The food was the best I've had at an all inclusive. Fresh fruit, vegtables and fish for all meals in the buffet. Fresh lobster on Seafood Night in the buffet. Bloody Mary (Absolut!) making's in the buffet for breakfast. The Oriental resturant was great! Try the Iku salad and Filet. The Italian was top-notch. Don't be afraid to rent a car! The roads are not as bad as reported. The worst part was finding the place from the airport. 30 minutes turned into 2.5 hours! Maps and directions are poor. If you drive, don't arrive at night and you'll be fine. The staff was excellent. I got sick one day (not at the hotel)but probably from food on the Arenal Volcano tour. A must see! The hot springs are unbelievable. Tour takes a long time by bus, I would go by car next time. No elevators, but the staff do any lifting of luggage for you. They drive you in busses and vans around the property if you need that. We just walked around and enjoyed it. Not too many kids, which makes it ideal for an adult getaway. Try the Congo Trail canopy tours about a half hour away. A blast! I will try Occidental on my next trip wherever it may lead.

The Occidental Grand Papagayo hotel was fabulous - clean, beautiful, well staffed. The pool was clean and there were plenty of places to chill out with a book and suntan lotion (probably because it was low season). We loved the food - especially the local specialties like black beans and rice. The wine was great, as were the cocktails. The beach was nice during the week, but note that on weekends the locals come down and it is more crowded. We took 2 tours while there, to Ricon volcano and rain forest and a sailing/snorkeling trip. Both were fantastic.

We stayed at the hotel just before Christmas and got excellently what we wanted; a quiet break in a very nice hotel with excellent weather. The rooms were clean, spacious and comfortable. Slightly more closet space would have been useful but not necessary. Food was generally excellent and the Grand Papagayo definitely ranks above the other all-inclusive resorts I have stayed at. Larger groups should note that the à la carte restuarants are small and at busy times your meals are limited to once at each per week. Couples will not have the same problem. The resort is fairly remote. This will only be a problem if your luggage doesn't make the connection to Liberia as the hotel has a very small gift shop with a very limited selection. Take a change of clothes for the first day and some toiletries in your hand luggage and you won't have to make the $30 cab ride to the nearest town to buy a t-shirt and shorts that I had to. All tours are available and good value, even the Arenal volcano, although this is a 6 hour round trip on poor roads. Your have been warned! The hotel is NOT for groups looking for a wild, party time and people looking for nightlife should consider Tamarind further South. However, if you are looking for a relaxing time, in warm comfortable, sunny weather with plenty to do during the day, I would definitely recommend the Occiedntal Grand Papagayo. One final word of warning, wherever you go in Costa Rica, take some bug spray!!

The staff was friendly and attentive, and the food was excellent. Breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets are available, as well as Italian and Oriental Restaurants for dinner. Additionally, the dinner buffet offers a different specialty every night (i.e., seafood, international, Italian, Mexican or Spanish dishes). Finally, the housekeeping staff deserves the "Most Meticulous" award. I had never seen a room cleaned so thoroughly on a daily basis! It was also worth paying extra for an oceanview room as we were awakened one morning by a family of monkeys swinging from the trees right in front of our window. Definitely worth the all-inclusive price!

My husband and i just loved the resort....we only stayed one night but we were both extremely satisfied. The only negitive that i would say is that the place is still somewhat"new"....and it took us FOREVER to find it....With the fact that the Costa Rician roads are horribly bumpy due to pot holes and there are no defined signs for directions to the joint...plan on spending some time driving!!! It's all well worth it!!
