Features
What to expect: Totally remodeled and reopened in 2000, this small hotel with high style has a streamlined teak lobby with abstract murals and chic minimalist furnishings. Rooms are cleverly planned to maximize space. The Marcel has quickly become a favorite with travelers from the U.S. and abroad, particularly from the worlds of fashion, film, and the arts. Amenity highlights: Guests can help themselves at the all-day, self-service cappuccino bar in the lobby. Faxing, copying, and concierge services are available at the front desk. A health club across the street offers guests privileged access for a fee. The library room off the lobby, with Saarinen and Knoll-designed furnishings, is available for private meetings. Insider tip: The Flatiron District, named for a triangular-shaped building at 23rd Street where Broadway and Fifth Avenue meet, has become one of New York's most popular dining and shopping centers. Designer boutiques have blossomed on Fifth Avenue in the upper teens and twenties, and restaurants such as Craft, Fleur de Salle, and the long-established Gramercy Tavern are among current favorites.
Complimentary cappuccino is available 24 hours a day at the lobby’s self-service cappuccino machine.

| The Marcel Hotel is a nice little hotel, very conveniently located. However, I found the rooms to be small in comparison to other hotels in the same price class and overall category. In particular when you travel with bigger suitcases, it is difficult to move around in the small rooms.

| We were very happy with our two-night stay at the Marcel. The bathroom and shower were great, the bed was very comfortable, the staff friendly and helpful, and the air conditioning was wonderful, especially important because it was the hottest weekend of the summer. We'll definitely go back again next time we're in NYC.

| Marcel worked out great. Nice, quiet residential area with easy access to everything via 23rd Street transportation. Bed was very comfortable, down comforters. Small room by out of town standard, but as big as much more expensive places I have stayed in the city. Trying to be boutique hotel, but not quite. And great price. Nice neighborhood restaurants, everything within walking distance. Safe feeling neighborhood for families.

| This hotel is being enlarged, and the lobby, hallways and elevator are shabby or under construction. The lobby and elevator were not always air conditioned and were very uncomfortable at times. The air conditioning in the room did not keep up with the humidity at night. The elevator was slow and the plumbing noisy. The room was otherwise clean and adequate, and the employees good natured. I will look harder for a better deal next time.

| On the plus side, the bed was comfortable, bathroom was efficient and clean. Although the staff was helpful, friendly and efficient, the construction on upper floors was noisy and led to a hallway water leakage problem that was not pleasant. The room was extremely small, even by New York standards - would have been okay for one person for a night or two, but not two people for five nights. The air/hotel package turned out not to be a bargain - better accomodations are available at a lower or equal price in NYC.

| The bed frame was broken and the room smelled like fresh paint. I had to prop the bed up using the trash can. Quite disappointing.

| This is a full service hotel, with a fine restaurant. However, the room defines the term tiny, as it did not even have room for a small desk or workspace.. Yet it did offer wireless internet service. I did get my EMail and other work done by setting up a 'desk" of sorts from my suitcase on the bed.

| This hotel was probably much better when it was renovated a few years back. The rooms we all right (small, which is expected in NYC) but no closet. The hallways were in pretty sad shape and the one tiny elevator was slow and unreliable. Our phone didn't work and our window broke. The staff fixed the window, which left a gap from which we had a cold breeze. The phone worked off and on. They appeared to be doing construction on the upper floors so there was quite a bit of noise. The only reason I would go back is for the location.

| Before entering the claustrophobic standard room, the guest is greeted outside by scaffolding and workmen who begin their day expanding this hotel before 9. Some staff recognize the inconvenience and are helpful but cannot overcome the constanct appearance of workmen in the elevator (at the expense of guests using it) in the lobby and hanging around. Clean, basic room; dark cavernous halls and tattered. Not worth the price.
