What to expect: Ian Shrager's first New York hotel set the standard for chic hotel design when it opened in 1985. Continually updated, it retains a loyal following from the fashion, entertainment, and publishing worlds. The optical-illusion, checkerboard lobby rug, inspired by old New York checker cabs, is a motif repeated throughout the hotel. The restaurant and bar attract trendy New Yorkers as well as visitors. The hotel's Murray Hill neighborhood is a mainly residential area bordering and within an easy walk of Midtown. Amenity highlights: The fourth-floor living room provides a private retreat for guests, offering comfortable seating and a work desk equipped with a computer and free Internet access. Free coffee, tea, and fruit are available in the living room until late each evening. The concierge is on duty 24 hours daily. Complimentary Continental breakfast is served in the chic Asia de Cuba restaurant, and the penthouse is a popular venue for private parties. Insider tip: Not far from Morgans is a delightful little courtyard known as Sniffen Court, at 150-158 E. 36th St. This residential enclave of 10 brick, Romanesque Revival carriage houses was built in the 1850s by one John Sniffen, and has been perfectly and improbably preserved off a busy block in modern New York.
A complimentary Continental breakfast is offered each morning. Asia de Cuba - A fusion of two popular cuisines in a dramatic setting draws both celebrities and food aficionados. A social table for 18, situated in the center, is a boon for solo diners. The restaurant is open for breakfast for hotel guests, and for lunch and dinner for the public. Morgans Bar - This dim, cellar hideaway has been discovered by trendy New Yorkers who like the offbeat, upscale and whimsical decor.

| The room was small but clean/typical for New York. Food and atmosphere was wonderful! The food price was a little high in price for the portions. Parking rate with no in/out is a bit much!

| Service was really special - could not open lobby door without immediate help from staff. Bathroom a bit small but adequate. Bed linens wonderful. Great restaurant adjacent to lobby with excellent breakfast and helpful waiters.

| Morgans will not be for everyone. Travellers who are expecting the conventionally noisy, oversized Orlando or Vegas style experience will not be satisfied. What Morgans provides is a quirky, highly polished kind of refined elegance where style and politeness are paramount. The rooms are quite large for NYC -- I don't know what the complainers on this site are talking about! The bathrooms are especially sybaritic, as long as you appreciate a quirky kind of chic. The fourth floor living room lounge is a treat, the staff is genteel and attentive in too many ways to list here (I especially appreciated the immediate upgrade to a suite when my room wasn't quite ready and the baggage claim checks for luggage that I left when I checked out), and the bed linens are sumptuous. If you want an adult hotel where sophistication reigns unfettered (it's not child friendly, but I like to escape families and confrontational tourists when I travel), this is the place.

| Hotel is very low key and elegant. But our room was VERY small, really unacceptable in this price range. Hall outside of room needed maintenance (scraped wallpaper). Breakfast, however, in the adjacent restaurant was avery nice.
