A splash of color, a dash of wit—by Capitol Hill

The Hotel George - A Kimpton Hotel Amenities
Opened in 1998, the artfully designed Hotel George occupies a 1928 building on Capitol Hill. The lobby's mezzanine level includes the cigar-friendly (and air-filtered) Billiard Room. Also on this level is the Back Room, a glass-enclosed boardroom with high-speed Internet access, granite conference table, ergonomic Herman Miller chairs, original art, and navy leather walls. Located on the lower level, the fitness center includes men's and women's steam rooms. Bistro Bis, adjoining the hotel, provides all in-room dining and catering.

Valet parking:
$30 per 24-hour period.
Fee does not include tax and is subject to change without prior notification.

Recreation
The Hotel George has a 24-hour fitness center with separate steam rooms for men and women. The Billiard Room, on the hotel's mezzanine level, has a pool table with a cherry-red surface and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking E Street.

A great walking and running route begins at the Capitol (about 3 blocks from the hotel), then rounds the Reflecting Pool—where politicos are often seen jogging—and continues along the National Mall (slightly more than 1 mile).

South of the Washington Monument, the Tidal Basin has paddleboats for rent, plus popular walkways that offer picturesque views and access to the Jefferson and FDR memorials.

The recreational activities listed below are available either on-site or near the hotel; fees may apply.

Features
What to expect: A stainless-steel canopy reminiscent of a theater marquee marks the entrance to the Hotel George. The two-story lobby is a dramatic statement in itself. This light-filled space dazzles with cherry-red area rugs, white coral walls, and cobalt-blue curved couches. Near the entry is a Louis Poulsen "artichoke" chandelier, a companion to the original at New York's Museum of Modern Art. A black baby-grand piano stands near the front desk. Fresh flowers are displayed on a chrome-and-glass table.

The Hotel George has counted among its guests John Malkovich, Alanis Morissette, and the late John F. Kennedy, Jr.—but with its playful, witty attitude, it's anything but pretentious.

Amenity highlights: Two circular mirrors—each about 5 feet in diameter—flank the entry to the Gallery, a two-story interior courtyard just beyond the lobby. Presiding over the Gallery is George, a pop portrait of America's first president by Andy Warhol protégé Steve Kaufman. Reproductions of this work hang in all guestrooms, and prints are available for sale. The lobby's mezzanine level features the cigar-friendly Billiard Room, with a red-surfaced pool table, two works from Kaufman's Cigars series, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking E Street. The celebrated—and celebrity favorite—Bistro Bis adjoins the lobby.

Insider tip: The International Spy Museum, about 6 blocks from the hotel, is one of Washington's most popular attractions. Visitors might stand in line an hour or more to be admitted after purchasing tickets. Guests of the Hotel George, however, can buy tickets at the hotel's front desk, and their admission is expedited when they arrive at the museum.

Bistro Bis - Politicians, powerbrokers, and entertainers are among the regulars at this see-and-be-seen two-level restaurant. French cuisine with a creative flair includes selections such as Sea Scallops Provençal, Steak Frites Béarnaise, and Onion Tart Alsaciènne. The restaurant's Zinc Bar—a fantasy of mirrors, metal, columns, and modern art—offers an extensive selection of wines and champagnes by the glass, as well as classic cocktails. Bistro Bis is accessible from the Hotel George lobby, and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

What I liked best was the extremely comfortable bed with down comforter and pillows. Kids loved the animal print robes, the flat screen TV hidden in the wall cabinet, the marble bathroom with separate tub and glass shower. First night there was a complimentary wine reception. And the staff was just wonderful. We took the train and this hotel was just a block from Union Station and walking distance to the Capitol and the Mall.

Clean hotel with friendly, helpful staff. We were supossed to get a king bed, but ended up with a queen. We did not complain, and thus didn't switch rooms. I'm sure if we would have said something that they would have corrected it. We were pleased with the hotel and, especially the service. We would go back in the future.
