| As a general rule of thumb, hotels next to military bases have suffered more wear and tear than an average hotel. This hotel is right next to the naval base and is no different. On the plus side, it's got great proximity to Old Dominion University, the naval base, and the ports. Unfortunately the rooms are really worn. Mine showed signs of previous water leaks. It was also raining very hard because of tropical depression Ernesto and I awoke to water coming in through the ceiling (on the 1st floor!). Had there not been previous evidence of leaking, I'd give the hotel the benefit of the doubt, but now I'd be concerned about mold. The front desk staff was pleasant, but not very helpful. I extended my stay an extra day (not through Expedia) and couldn't get them to give me a zero-balance receipt. I don't believe that the final day was paid for and tried to verify that. I asked to speak with a manager and she declined to be helpful. Not only that, she declined to even speak with me. The desk clerk had to keep ferrying messages back and forth to her office. Great customer service!!! When a guest is viewed as an inconvenience, it speaks to the quality of the hotel. In all, this is a sub-par Hampton Inn. It's worn down and there are plenty of other hotels in the area that are better.

| No close dining options, area of town not great. Although it's not far from downtown, it's best use would be for Navy business since it's very close to the base. Hotel itself lived up to the standards of a smaller Hampton Inn.
