The 24-hour business center has a sofa for guests’ relaxation. Complimentary overnight shoeshines are available.

Valet parking:

Recreation
The Hotel Monaco is 4 blocks south of Mt. Vernon Square, one of the city’s many vest pocket parks, and 4 blocks north of the National Mall.

Features
What to expect: History and style grace the Monaco, set in the former General Post Office/Tariff Building. Deep-green marble walls and green glass chandeliers highlight the lobby. A National Historic Landmark, the Monaco has incorporated the distinctive Robert Mills/Thomas Walter architecture. Although many business travelers use these facilities, it’s predominantly used by vacationers.

Amenity highlights: Pets are invited as guest at the Hotel Monaco, and a goldfish in a bowl is available to guests who want a pet but didn’t bring one. Rooms come with robes, high-speed Internet hookup, and cordless phone; a free overnight shoeshine is available. The lobby area, called the Library for its collection of books, features a working fireplace for cool weather, and serves evening wine and morning coffee

Insider tip: The hotel is 4 blocks from the National Mall with its festivals, carousel, and open space to jog or walk. Most Smithsonian Institution museums, the National Gallery of Art, and the Botanical Gardens are along the Mall.

Poste - An open kitchen, outdoor seating in a glass-enclosed area, skylights, and large picture windows are among the highlights of this modern brasserie. High-sided booths provide privacy. Sandwiches include smoked turkey with Brie or crab cake. Dinners include salmon, fried green tomatoes, and whitefish salad, or grilled steak. The restaurant, formerly the mail sorting room in the late 1800s, has the original cast iron ceilings, granite walls, and masonry floors. A bar is available while the restaurant is open and after hours.

Hotel is located a few blocks from the National Gallery on the mall. The area is quiet with several very nice restaurants in the immediate area. Like most conversions a little weird (it was formerly a post office) but overall a very agreeable hotel.

I thought it was a nice hotel, with a friendly staff and a good central locaton in the city. I was disapointed that the view from my room looked directly into another guest room. But overall, I felt like it was a quality hotel. It had amazingly high ceilings and interesting flow through the hotel. It was an intresting experience staying in a hotel that was converted from a federal buliding.

Interesting adaptive reuse of an historic building but makes for some quirky conditions.

My daughter and I stayed a week and had the time of our lives. The hotel and restaurant staff were very friendly and helpful. No mechanized wake-up calls here! We had a nice, friendly voice that would cheerfully wake us up and offer to call back again in 15 minutes if we wanted. The food was amazing! We ate at the hotel restaurant every night except one and regretted that night. Close to all major DC attractions. We walked everywhere except to the zoo.

It began when my cab pulled up to the front door. This burly guy in a suit opened the door, looked at me and my bag and gave me a "well, what are you waiting for?", look. On to the room. The bedside lamp had a short, causing the light to flicker on and off, the coffee pot was broken. Overall the room was sparse and poorly laid out.

Impressed with the historic significance of the building itself, the ambience, the location, the ease with which we could move around the city from our location
