| Formerly an antebellum plantation, this gracious resort with formal English gardens is four miles south of Thomasville. Dressed in equestrian or traditional Southern style, rooms have views of the rolling pasture, magnolia trees, or moss-draped oaks. The glass-roofed pool house also shelters a terrarium blooming with enormous orchids; outside, peacocks strut the grounds.

Set on 40 acres of velvety green lawns, moss-draped oaks, magnolia trees, pastures, and gardens, this genteel resort comprises 30 buildings, all on the National Register of Historic Places. The Showboat Theatre, now used for functions and meetings, hosted the first private screening of Gone With The Wind. The resort’s centerpiece is the rosy pink Inn at Melhana, built in 1825 as a plantation great house. Today, it includes an acclaimed restaurant, several guestrooms, and a veranda facing the Avenue of Magnolias. The resort features formal gardens, a marble fish pool, and a sky-lit indoor pool that doubles as a terrarium with tropical plants. The pool includes an indoor deck and a veranda. Peacocks strut throughout the grounds. A well-equipped fitness center, clay-surface tennis courts, and croquet are on site. Weekend carriage rides and docent-led walking tours of the grounds enrich the Old South experience. The restaurant offers Southern gourmet cuisine with formal, white-glove service. A full breakfast and afternoon wine hour are complimentary. Tea and treats are served in the afternoon.

The indoor pool resembles a terrarium, with sky-lit ceiling and profusions of tropical plants. The fitness center offers a variety of Nautilus exercise equipment, including cardiovascular and resistance machines. Personal trainers and massage (by appointment) also are available (surcharge). The resort also offers clay tennis courts, croquet, and board games. County Oaks Municipal Golf Course is 10.5 miles away. Birdsong Nature Center, 11.5 miles from the hotel, includes 565 acres of fields, forests, swamp, with 10 miles of trails ideal for watching birds and other wildlife. The center also includes a Butterfly Garden and nature programs. Historic walking and driving tours are available five miles from the resort. Nearby activities include quail hunting and horseback riding. The resort will also arrange deep-sea fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately an hour away. The recreational activities listed below are available either on site or near the hotel; fees may apply.

Chapin Dining Rooms - The restaurant showcases gourmet Southern cuisine in a setting of white-glove service, including white linens, crystal, china, and silver. Appetizers include Fried Green Tomatoes with Herb-Seared Gulf Shrimp and Diver Sea Scallops with Lemon Chive Oil. Entrees include seafood, duck, quail, lamb, and chicken dishes seasoned with herbs fresh-picked from the plantation garden. Buttermilk pie and crème brulée are among the dessert highlights. Live music is presented weekends. Dining is available indoors or on the patio. Reservations and jackets for men are required. The restaurant will prepare picnic lunches and provides room service. Poolside service is also available.
