Gracious downtown hotel linked to underground city

Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth Amenities
The Fairmont Queen Elizabeth is the home of The Beaver Club, one of Canada's top restaurants. The fur-trading tradition of 18th-century Québec is the inspiration for the restaurant's decor and menu of regional cuisine.

Aside from standard concierge services, the hotel offers guests on-site ticketing for major sporting events, live theater, and special events through the Admission ticket service, located at the concierge desk.

The business center located in the hotel's lower level offers a wide array of computer and business equipment for on-site use. Laptop and printer rental for in-room use is also available.

Recreation
One of the original starting points for Montréal's now extensive underground city, the lower level of the hotel is a gateway to 20 miles (32 km) of subterranean passages lined with shops and restaurants.

The recreational activities listed below are available either on-site or near the hotel; fees may apply.

Features
What to expect: The expansive lobby is decorated with Canadian art. Wingback chairs, sofas, and loveseats surround a large fireplace. Guests enjoy high tea every afternoon in the serene Tea Lounge. Located above the train station, the hotel attracts businesspeople during the week, and families on weekends. John Lennon wrote "Give Peace a Chance" here during his 1969 "Bed-In for Peace" with Yoko Ono.

Amenity highlights: Built in 1958, and most recently renovated in 2003, the hotel is now equipped with ramps and accessible in all public areas and many guestrooms. Common areas have wireless high-speed Internet access (fee). The hotel is one of the original gateways to Montréal's extensive underground city, so guests can wander miles of shops, cafés, and restaurants without an overcoat even when it's cold above ground.

Insider tip: Coffee lovers should be sure to visit The Beaver Club, where a Rube Goldberg-like copper and glass contraption imported from Belgium brews the perfect cup at tableside.

The Beaver Club - Recognized as one of Canada's premier restaurants, the legendary Beaver Club offers French cuisine deeply rooted in Québec's voyageur and fur-trading heritage. Open for lunch and dinner, the restaurant began as a private club, founded in 1785. Today, club memberships are honorary and include luminaries from the sports, business, and entertainment arenas. The dining room is traditional, with wood-paneled walls, white-linen table settings, and rich leather dining chairs. A private dining room is available for use by small groups. The seasonal menu showcases regionally inspired French cuisine with some low-fat and vegetarian choices. A wine cellar holds more than 700 vintages, including a selection of Canada's top wines.

Le Montréalais Bistro - Le Montréalais is a two-level restaurant open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The casual, European ambience is complemented by a menu featuring Mediterranean cuisine, grilled meat dishes, and fresh fish. Buffets are available at breakfast and lunch. Children ages 6 and under receive complimentary meals when accompanied by a parent; meals for children ages 7 to 12 are discounted by 50%.

Les Voyageurs Bar Lounge - Serving lunch, dinner, and late-night snacks, Les Voyageurs has a long brass and wood bar, small intimate tables, and comfortable group sitting areas with leather couches and wingback chairs. Stools surround the grand piano, where a singer performs every evening. Guests enjoy a seasonal oyster bar (September to March), local microbrews on tap, an extensive martini list, and local liqueurs such as maple-syrup-flavored whiskey. The signature drink is "Give Peace a Chance," a gin-and-sake tribute to John Lennon and Yoko Ono, who staged their 1969 week-long "Bed-In for Peace" in Suite 1742 of the hotel.

We think we could get lot better hotels for prices lot lesser than this. Except for the fact that this is near shops, we found nothing good about this hotel. We have not seen a 4 star rated hotel without complimentory breakfast!!

The Fairmont Queen Elizabeth is remeniscent of older grand hotels. The location is key to a Montreal visit. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The restaurants are great. Most importantly though, the Queen Elizabeth is about service. We always look forward to return visits.

My wife and I stayed at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth for 3 nights in Aug. '06. We were satisfied with the service and the hotel in general. It is a large hotel with direct access to the Amtrak terminal and Rail Canada as well as Montreal's "Underground city". Just take the elevator down to "Gare Centrale", pass thru the glass electric doors and your in the Underground city with the seemingly endless shop and stores, about 100 foot more then you're in the Train Station area which is well kept and completely safe. We stayed at the Queen Elizabeth four years ago, and we had no regrets. We chose the "Fairmont" room type which was a little smaller than what I expected, but it had a king size bed. The bathroom was smaller too than what I am accustomed too, but had everything we needed. Our Room was on the Rene Levesque Ave. side of the hotel which was more scenic as it faced Mont Royal. The hotel is in an excellent location downtown for shopping and there is a nearby "Metro" subway stop. Getting around is no problem at this location. We used the Valet parking at the hotel, but our car did not get much use except for an excursion to Quebec City. We highly recommend this hotel.

The Fairmont Queen Elizabeth is a great 4 star hotel in downtown Montreal. Our room, while not overly large had enough space for 2 double beds, desk and chair, armoire, as well as an additional chair in the corner. We had a great view overlooking Rene Levesque Blvd with Mount Royal in the distance. The staff is very courteous and housekeeping did an excellent job. We were able to step off the train at Central Station and walk right up to the hotel. Would definitely stay here again!

I just came back today and would definitely recommend this hotel. We paid extra for a view of the city and were extremely satisfied. It was very convenient to take the escalator to the under ground city for coffee in the morning. We were amazed at how clean Montreal is. I would highly recommend breakfast at Nickels on St.Catherine's. If you are an early riser, take advantage of the breakfast special @ Nickels for $3.99 (2 eggs, homefries, bacon ,toast).

We stayed over a long weekend in Montreal. The Hotel was immaculate, the service was well above average and was in walking distance to both Old Montreal and the famous St. Catherine Street. There is a nice indoor swimming pool in the hotel but it is not a heated pool and we found it to be quite chilly. We did find that the drinks in the Hotel restaurant were on the expensive side, even though they were yummy. $48.00 for 3 bar drinks, before tip.
