Features
What to expect: This 33-story, custom-built hotel opened in 2004. The lobby is an Asian-inspired retreat, with bamboo gardens flanking the entryway, orchids arranged in tube vases, and votive candles lit at nightfall. The seating area includes a gas fireplace, velvet and leather settees, and a black-and-cream palette accented with scarlet. The hotel hosts an upscale clientele of executives, entertainment figures, leisure travelers, and dignitaries visiting the nearby U.N.
Amenity highlights: David Rockwell, designer of the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, created the hotel’s soft-toned, understated, and sophisticated look. Every piece of furniture in the public areas and guestrooms was designed specifically for the hotel. Just off the lobby, the two-level restaurant, Riingo, is one of Midtown’s most stylish dining destinations. The menu spotlights innovative American-Japanese fare.
Insider tip: The New York Water Taxi is an exhilarating, affordable way to see and get around town. Far more fun than a street taxi and considerably more scenic than the subway, these bright-yellow double-decker catamarans zip from the Upper East Side along the East River, around the tip of Lower Manhattan, up to Pier 84 along the Hudson River, and back again—with stops in between and spectacular views all the way. The closest stop to the hotel is at the east end of East 34th Street.
Riingo - This handsome, two-level restaurant serves innovative American-Japanese cuisine. (“Riingo” is derived from the Japanese word for apple.) Menu highlights include Whole Snapper with Red Miso Broth, Seared Char with Herb Coconut Milk, and, for dessert, Donuts with Green Tea Kulfi (Indian ice cream). The main level includes a curved-front lounge—where the signature drink is the Red Apple Martini—a 40-seat dining room, and a sushi bar. A semi-private “bento booth” is appointed with ebony wood and kimono-inspired fabrics. A Carrara marble stairway leads to a mezzanine with a community table overlooking the main dining room and more intimate booths overlooking the lounge. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily; brunch on weekends.

| I loved The Alex. The staff was exceptional. The room was clean and very comfortable. No complaints about this hotel at all. I will be in NY again in a few months and I will stay again at The Alex, no doubt.

| Me and my wife spent 4 days at the Alex recently. The hotel is pleasant, not overwhelming like many NYC hotels in this category tend to be. The hotel staff is friendly and extremely helpful. The rooms are small, but very comfortable and clean. The reason The Alex gets a 4 for hotel service, is that on 2 or more occasions we asked for ice to be delivered to our room. It took around 25-40 minutes for the delivery to be completed.

| We were extremely pleased with The Alex, our room (the suite was well equipped and very family friendly), and especially the staff who helped make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. We'll definitely be returning in the future, perhaps the same time next year...

| My husband and I truly enjoyed our week long stay at The Alex. Our room was spacious (difficult to find in NY) and it was also very clean and modern. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. We ordered room service one night and the food comes from the restaurant located in the hotel... delicious! The hotel is located just a couple of blocks from Grand Central Station, where it is very easy to get the subway. It is also within walking distance of great shopping, and restaurants. Just be prepared to walk a lot when you're in NY city. We can't wait to go back to The Alex. We truly felt pampered!!!

| This was my 4th trip to the Big Apple and my first time staying at The Alex. I stayed in a 1bdrm suite and I would challenge anyone to find a more cleaner, modern and spacious room in NYC without paying an arm and a leg. The staff was totally gracious. The bellmen were awesome. If they don't know where the happening places are, no one does. Without question The Alex will be my permanent quarters anytime visiting Metropolis again.

| This is a very nice place to stay. The staff was extremely friendly and the room was very nice. When we arrived the room was not ready however we were given complimentary drinks in the bar and them given a bottle of wine. The Alex is in walking distance of almost everything. I would definitely stay here again.
