Features
What to expect: Built in 1924, the Marriott East Side was originally known as the Shelton Towers. Artist Georgia O’Keeffe used it as a subject for a painting, Houdini performed a daring escape from a locked box in the pool, and a certain James Stare set the world record for continuous dancing on its roof. Marriott restored the hotel in 2002, retaining original woodwork and the geometrically patterned marble floor, and adding a gleaming entrance and glass canopy. The hotel attracts business travelers and Midtown shoppers and sightseers to its "old Manhattan" style and prime location. Amenity highlights: The hotel offers an on-site exercise room, plus a concierge and theater/travel/tour desk. A gift shop is on-site and valet parking is available. Insider tip: Designed by Arthur Loomis Harmon, the architect of the Empire State Building, the hotel was once the world’s tallest building and hailed in the 1920s by Architecture Magazine as “the most notable architectural achievement of our time.” The exterior’s neo-Romanesque decorative embellishments include gargoyles and sculptures of owls, lions, and pelicans.
Shelton Grille - The hotel restaurant serves American fare for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Lobby Lounge - The lounge in the paneled marble lobby serves cocktails and a variety of other beverages.

| Well, I paid too much for this hotel in a recent November trip in the picturesque New York City. The major plus about this hotel is that it is right in the heart of Manhattan. There are plenty of excellent restaurants nearby and the is a nice electricity inside the hotel. The Service was ok. They did their best consider how busy it was, but as is seemingly traditional with hotels in Manhattan, it can take 15-30 minutes of waiting about until you are finally given a key to your room. Then, when I got to my room, it stunk of cigarette smoke. Not the smell you'd expect from a decent hotel such as this place. Aside from the cigarette stench, the room was spacious and comfortable by New York standards. It was also very quiet. Subway is a few blocks away and the staff were very helpful in recommending places to eat or drink at. Because of the perfect location, despite the minor mishaps, I enjoyed my stay there, but, I will check other hotels first before I'd chose to come here again. If you've booked, don't worry, everything you need is only a few blocks away.

| We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. Check in time was at 3:00pm, and even thought we got there at 11:00am they had a room ready for us with out a hassle. The hotel is in a great location, close to several coffee shops and restaurants, which made it very convenient to grab a quick bite at night. Our room was very clean, and the beds were comfortable.

| midtown east made this a convenient launch point for a christmas vacation with the kids. Walking distance from most big attractions. Also, the staff was very attentive without being pesky. A $21 breakfast buffet was about the ponly drawback. Pricey regardless of how good it was. Besides with so many good bagel shops in the city why bother with hotel food?
