Maruba is a great resort and probably one of the nicer places in Belize. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The main dining and bar area are a little tacky with black lights and a little too much leopard skin print, but generally the place is nice. This resort is in in the jungle and there isn't much else in the area it will take at least an hour to get to other destinations. You will rely on the resort for food and expeditions unless you have a rental car, but they do both well, it just limits your options and will cost a little more.

Beautiful but limited-services resort. Friendly neighborhood locals very helpful. Rented a golf cart from Jaguar Reef (2 mile walk south) which helped get us to the local grocery and restaurants during our rainy stay. Most tour services are located south of town. Nearby Bullfrog Adventures for snorkeling at South Water Key highly recommended. Isabelle, Lukie-guide, and Capt. Spar were fantastic. Local legend, Floyd, was awesome fly fishing guide for permit. Driftwood Beach Bar and Pizza, Chef Rob's and Innies were very good restaurants. Resort had good security which contributed to an overall positive stay in Hopkins -The Friendliest Village in Belize. Recommended with reserve.

My husband and I enjoyed 4 days at Matachica. It is a beautiful resort, secluded and has an extremely good restaurant. The grilled snapper at lunch was our favourite. Would definitely recommend people consider staying here. However, if you are going in the low season you need to consider: - hotel is accessible by boat only and the boat only goes when guests are arriving or departing. In low season this can be very infrequent, resulting in you be stuck in the resort or be willing to pay about USD 40 for a trip into town with the taxis. Though some locals told us (the hotel didn't), you can apparently buy a weeks pass - other resorts nearby are also closed, so you cannot just go walking into any other very easily for a change in restaurants/bars - the hotel likes to use there recommended tour providers, which I have to say are good, however if you want to do the Blue Hole day trip difficulties can arise due to lack of numbers going, so request from the start you want to go with any provider if you are really keen. I didn't realise till it was too late and missed out. - lastly, the front desk, bar and restaurant close very early in the offseason - 9pm on a Saturday night! Don't think of going off for an evening stroll before a night cap as you won't get it. The front desk being closed also means last minute cancellations of trips messages don't reach you and you might be on the pier at 5.15am waiting for your pick-up. The first staff member arrived at 6am.

Ka Ana is the only place to stay in San Ignacio for several reasons. First, it's convenient to the best excursions in the western part of Belize being right along the Western highway. We met travelers who regretted booking less convenient hotels like Mystic River (45 minutes from town) and Blancaneaux (90 minutes from town). The last thing you want is a 90 minute drive after an 10-hour excursion during the day. Second, the hotel is truly a 4-star resort. When you drive through San Ignacio you won't believe such a nice resort exists in the area. Finally, the hotel staff is extremely friendly and genuinely happy to have you as a guest. Fodor's guide book commented the hotel meals were pricey, but every meal was truly gourmet. I'm sorry but $12 for a complete American breakfast, including a beverage, is not expensive. Try dining in other resort locations like the Cayman Islands if you think Ka Ana expensive, you'll quickly change your opinion.

I really felt comfortable hear and very well cared for but still like I was in a fancy resort with a beautiful setting and hotel. Also the bed was super comfortable and they decorated our bed with rose pettles and gave us a bottle of local wine because it was our honey moon! I hope we can come back someday.
