We were very happy with our vacation at Hawk's Cay Resort. The room was clean and had the nicest bathroom of any hotel we've ever stayed. We read the other reviews and planned ahead by packing for breakfast and snacks in the room. The mini fridge was completely empty, so we were able to store milk, fruit, drinks, etc. We brought our own coffee pot too. The only complaints we had were the pillows are feather and completely mushy, so if you're used to a firm/supportive pillow bring your own, and the a/c and mini fridge were really loud at night, but that was solved by turning the a/c fan on high, which drowned out the clunking with white noise. There are a lot of birds that hang out at the pool, as well as iguanas. It was not a big deal to me, but some other guests seem to dislike that. We asked to have a new duvet since ours smelled like the former guests' strong perfume, and they brought one right away. We also had a broken alarm clock, and they brought a new one that day. The room had an electronic safe, which was a nice addition. The resort is about 8 minutes from Marathon, which had a K-Mart, Publix, Winn Dixie, and several restaurants including fast food options like Subway, Taco Bell, McDonalds, etc. for lunch if you're looking to save money. We splurged on dinner at the local seafood restaurants and watched the sunset each night. The drive to Key West only took about an hour and 20 minutes. My husband was disappointed that the resort does not allow you to fish on their property, but there are a few spots right down the road off the US 1 bridge or at one of the state parks. We recommend Curry Hammock park for inexpensive kayak rentals ($21 for 2 hours). We checked out three other "resorts" while we were down there for future reference, and Hawk's Cay was by far the nicest, cleanest place around. It was no comparison. Even though our room (Island View King) had a horrible view of the roof over the circle drive, it was still a great choice to stay in that area of the Keys, and we would definitely choose this hotel again. I also loved that this is a non-smoking resort, so the rooms smelled clean and fresh. Of course, there were people that broke the rules and smoked by the pool, but not too many of them. It is a luxury hotel with a very nice staff. One thing to keep in mind, they do charge a $500 "hold" on your debit card for incidentals. Fortunately, when we checked out, we had not eaten at the resort and had a zero balance. Booking with hotels.com covered the $20 daily resort fee, which meant no need to tip the bell hop or valet parking people. We feel we got an excellent deal for the price we paid through this website and are very happy with our choice. If we return to this Key, we would certainly choose Hawk's Cay again.
