The ocean-front rooms, which are relatively expensive, have a great outlook. The studio rooms, however, are close to the very busy main road, and are noisy. The rooms have been renovated since we stayed there last year, which has certainly helped, but it still seemed distinctly average for the price (which doesn't usually include a mandatory $18 per day 'resort fee'). Recommended, but with caution. You're never going to rave about the hotel.

I love this resort. I had stayed here several times as a child but I had not been here for over 15 years and it was as wonderful as I remembered it if not better! The lobby was newly renovated after the fire in 2008 and they did a fantastic job. The grounds and the pool were very well taken care of, you really don't even need to leave the property. We did have an upgraded room, a Lagoon View 1-Bedroom Suite which was amazing, definitely worth the money. The spa was nice but a bit over priced (as are most). There were only 2 negative issues which they could improve on. First the maid service, or at least the one we had, was not up to the standards I would expect. They did the bare minimum and did not replace the complimentary shampoo/conditioner and water each day. They also forgot to leave toilet paper on one occasion! They just didn't tidy up like you'd expect in a place like this. The other issue was the very mixed levels of customer service among the hotel staff. Some staff like they valet who greeted us were obviously very very well trained while others lacked even the basic customer service knowledge (i.e, the customer is always right!). It was mainly in the restaurants. First, the hostest told us we could not have the last table on the beach because there were only two of us and she was supposed to save it for 4 people! When I questioned this she told us to sit down and wait while she asked her manager if it was ok - very strange! The waitress we had was also not the quality you'd expect at a restaurant of this caliber (and price point). She was just unsure of herself and timid, probably due to lack of sufficient training. But overall we had a fantastic stay and will be returning!

The hotel was great. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful! The front desk clerk, Jay, was great. Our 7 yr old son, Timmy, kept him talking. They have a free computer with a printer in the lobby. That was great. We were able to check out area attractions, print coupons, and even access my son's school website for homework. We wish at least one of the pools were heated. We were there at the end of a very rare cold snap and there were dead fish on the beaches. They were cleaned up and everything looked great. There are alot of bars for those who drink. I would think this would be paradise for anyone who enjoys to party. However, my son and I did enjoy a couple of Shirley Temples at the poolside bar. We enjoyed jetskiing, but really think that hotel guests should get a discount, as an incentive to stay and use their amenities, opposed to going elsewhere where it may be less expensive. The marina area was nice. It is obvious that they are working on upgrading the hotel and grounds. This is a large resort with many ameneties. The only thing we diliked is that you must pay $5 to use their chairs beachside and poolside. Many people were lying on the beach with a towel, instead of enjoying the loung chairs. Seems petty to have your hotel guests pay to sit. Having to pay extra to sit on a chair seems excessive.

What an absolutely wonderful surprise The Islander Resort was. It is a sprawling property with with a LARGE sand beach area that has many beautiful palm trees and great chaise lounges, and the gounds are LUSH with tropical plants. All the rooms are on ground level and have screen porches--a feature I wasn't sure I would like. (For a short trip, the kitchenette included in the room was unnecessary, however for those staying a week or more would find this helpful.)The whole property has recently been updated and the rooms had a bright, happy "carribean" feel. The pool area was just beautiful and included TWO pools with well designed hardscapes and lush landscapes and always had Carribean or Jimmy Buffet music quietly in the background--such a perfect mood maker!!! The pool bar and alfresco dining was very "Floribbean" and the food as such a big surprise. We are "foodies" and our food choices we excellent!! Bottom Line---this place had a very updated but RETRO feel. SOOO very comfortableand like being in OLD Florida--something one just doesn't find anymore. We would definitely stay there again. What a Pleasant Surprise!
